GB Crews for Henley and Lucerne
GB Rowing today announced its crews for Henley Royal Regatta (29 June-3 July) and the final stage of the World Cup series in Lucerne, Switzerland (July 8-10), in the knowledge that the men’s four, sponsored by Camelot, have already won the BearingPoint overall World Cup title for 2005 because of their wins at Eton in May and Munich ten days ago.
The four, featuring Steve Williams, Peter Reed, Alex Partridge and Andy Hodge, will see the points as academic, though, and will want to continue to impress before the World Championships in Japan later this year (August 28 -September 4).
At Henley and Lucerne they will be tested by much stiffer competition from non-European crews likely to include Olympic silver medallists, Canada and the USA.
Britain’s crews for the World Championships will be selected after Lucerne and will be announced on July 14th.
Meanwhile, the Camelot-sponsored British women’s quadruple scull of Rebecca Romero, Sarah Winckless, Frances Houghton and Katherine Grainger are also current world cup leaders after wins at Eton and Munich. Ukraine, the Olympic bronze medallists, are the only nation who can catch them.
The quadruple scull will miss Henley on doctor’s advice – Sarah Winckless is still recovering from a wrist sprain and the medics have advised her to be cautious with it so that she is fully recovered for Lucerne.
Britain has entered a men’s eight for both Henley and Lucerne. This crew, newly-formed this season, skipped Munich to put in the necessary training hours together if they are to have an impact this season.
Peter Wells will be competing in the single scull if he passes a doctor’s inspection next week.
His brother Matthew is already part of the men’s quadruple scull which performed so promisingly in Munich by reaching the final and finishing fourth.
Debbie Flood, a finalist in the single scull in Munich after racing a superbly tactical semi-final, will now team up with Elise Laverick in a double scull for Lucerne.
Britain will also race two women’s pairs and a four in the open weight categories in Lucerne made up from the eight which won bronze at Eton.
Katie Greves and Carla Ashford were winners of the recent internal team trials for the pair and Jessica Eddie and Anna Bebington are being considered for selection for the World U23 Championships later this year.
The women’s four is made up of three of the World U23 gold medal line-up from last year.
There is a change, too, to the lightweight women’s double scull after last week’s internal trials. This Olympic-class boat will now feature Helen Casey and Jennifer Goldsack, a finalist in the lightweight single in Munich. Both are from Wallingford Rowing Club.
Britain has also entered a lightweight quadruple scull. Tanya Brady, a captain in the army, is part of this crew.
Tim Male will race the lightweight single scull. He was seventh in Munich ten days ago while Zac Purchase who won silver in this boat in Germany prepares for the world U23 Champoinships.
