Full Team List for World Championships, Gifu, Japan
GB Rowing today named a new-look men’s eight for the World Championships later this month as well as adding a men’s single and women’s lightweight quadruple scull to its previoulsy announced squad for the event taking place in Gifu, Japan, from August 28 – September 4.
West Byfleet’s Kieran West, 27, 2000 Olympic eight gold medallist, will stroke the men’s eight in Japan. The unrelated Josh West, 28, of Cambridge University and twice a former World Championships silver medallist in the four and part of GB’s eight at the 2004 Olympic Games, has also moved into the bigger boat from the pair which the duo had raced earlier this year.
The eight is now a blend of experience and youth and has been put together with the future in mind.
As a result of the reshuffle, which took place during GB’s overseas altitude training camp, Phil Simmons, 30, and Tom Broadway, 22, from the men’s sweep squad will now race in a pair in Japan.
Meanwhile Colin Smith, from Oxford University, has been selected to race in the open weight single scull in Japan. The 23 year-old was a world U23 silver medallist in this discipline a year ago.
As expected the GB selectors also today named a lightweight women’s quadruple scull which includes Hester Goodsell of York University, winner of a lightweight single scull gold at the World U23 Championships in Amsterdam earlier this month. Tanya Brady, her team-mate, is a serving captain in the army.
These new crews join the crews previously selected and announced on July 14th.
The men’s open weight four and the women’s quadruple scull are GB’s leading boats at this year’s World Championships. Both are sponsored by Camelot and the squad receives lottery money from both UK Sport and Sport England.
The men’s four features Olympic gold medallist Steve Williams along with Alex Partridge, Peter Reed and Andy Hodge. Katherine Grainger, twice an Olympic silver medallist, is joined in the women’s quad by Rebecca Romero, Fran Houghton and Sarah Winckless – all of whom are already Olympic medallists.
Britain also has new but developing combinations in the women’s double scull – Elise Laverick and Debbie Flood – as well as the men’s quadruple scull who won Britain’s first ever senior World Cup medal in the discipline last month in Lucerne. Matthew Wells, Matthew Langridge, Stephen Rowbotham and Alan Campbell form this crew.
GB’s lightweight crews have also had a good early season. James Lindsay-Fynn and Mark Hunter are in the Olympic-class double scull. The lightweight men’s four has shown progress whilst Zac Purchase and Jo Hammond have both been lightweight single scull world cup medallists in 2005.
Britain also has sound medal chances in the two adaptive classes – designed for elite rowers with a disability.
In total Britain’s squad for Japan now features 57 athletes in 18 boats with seven reserves. 25 of the athletes are women and 32 are men.
At the last equivalent World Championships – including all the Olympic boats and held in Milan in 2003 – Britain won six medals of which three were in the Olympic classes. Katherine Grainger and Cath Bishop, now retired, were gold medallists in the women’s pair.
