Four medals for GB Rowing Team Paralympic class boats in Munich
All four GB Paralympic-class crews won world cup medals in Munich this evening.
Tom Aggar continued his unbeaten run since 2007 by winning the adaptive men’s single scull final by a considerable distance in Munich this evening at the season’s only world cup for adaptive racers.
The Londoner burst onto the scene with his performances on the same Munich course at the 2007 World Championships.
“I don’t really count the wins”, said Aggar who established a lead at 250m gone and kept piling on the pressure. “I just want to continue to try and lay down personal bests. I wasn’t far off that today”.
His gold was followed by a ground-breaking performance for GB in the adaptive mixed double scull when Captain Nick Beighton, a relatively recent recruit to the sport, took bronze with Samantha Scowen, who was a world championships finalist in 2009.
Beighton and Scowen had the strength and determination to create their medal opportunity today in a tough final.
“We’ve done something no other GB double has done before”, said Scowen.
“We now know that we can be competitive with some of the best crews in the world. So now we’ve got to go back and work hard and see if we can progress”, said Beighton.
The final medal podium of the day was somewhat over-run by GB rowers. Both of the nation’s mixed adaptive coxed fours won medals – the first string crew featuring newcomers Pam Relph and the cox Lily van den Broecke won gold – despite 2009 world medallist Dave Smith catching a considerable crab with 300m to go and the second GB boat took bronze. Germany
split them with silver.
Naomi Riches of the gold medal combination said: “The race went pretty well, we stayed relaxed and long which we knew we had to do to pull to our best. We had a scary moment towards the end but we regained our composure and our rhythm. We were determined not to let Germany catch us – we really wanted that gold medal”.
Dave Smith from the same crew said: “It’s an amazing feeling to win gold especially after making such a big mistake. It’s a long time since I last raced (in Poznan 2009) and a long way back from rehab and it was just one of those things. But we recovered quickly and after another racing start we thankfully managed to keep it all together”.
Ryan Chamberlain, back after an operation over the winter, was delighted with his crew’s bronze medal. “It’s great to be back racing. We are a very competitive squad and it is good to see both crews getting medals”.
“We talked about it in the squad this week about both crews getting a medal”, said the cox Rhiannon Jones.
“It’s great to see us all achieve that”.
