Houghton and mixed adaptive four win their heats
The GB Rowing Team opened its 2012 Munich World Cup account today with two heat victories in events for rowers aiming to compete in this year’s Paralympic Games.
Andy Houghton, from Newbury and a silver medallist here three years ago, looked smooth and calm at the start of his arms-only single scull heat. He built the pressure and was way ahead of the field at the end. He now races in Saturday’s finals.
“I went out to halfway and then assessed the situation before moving on”, said Houghton. “Things went pretty much as I expected them to. I’m really happy to be back racing”.
Pam Relph, Naomi Riches, David Smith, James Roe and cox Lily van den Broecke were also winners today and progress to Saturday evening’s mixed adaptive coxed four.
They were three seconds ahead of their nearest challengers, France, at halfway and more than a length clear at the finish to win in 3:34.42. Germany won the opposing heat.
Conditions this evening were perfect with warm evening sunshine and clear, still water.
Kathryn Twyman will be first to race for the GB Rowing Team tomorrow morning in the lightweight women’s single scull at 8.45am UK time. A further 16 British crews will follow before the lunch-break. Tomorrow afternoon will be for repechages and quarter-finals.
