GB Rowing Team crews for the World U23 Championships

A 44-strong squad of rowers from the GB Rowing Team hoping to break into the senior ranks for the Rio 2016 Olympic cycle will race at the World U23 Rowing Championships this week in Lithuania.

The team includes the grandson of GB rowing medallist from the 1948 Olympic Games in Great Britain, Michael Lapage, as well as a number of rowers who have already won medals at World Junior and World U23 level. Several of the squad have also been training and racing with the Siemens-sponsored senior GB Rowing Team.

The Championships, held in Trakai from July 11-15, will feature more than 800 rowers from 56 countries and give Britain’s next generation valuable international experience as part of GB’s ‘Road to Rio’ programme.

This year’s crop of Lottery funded, promising, young rowers have seen the precedent set at last year’s Championships of U23s performing well and being invited to make the step up into the senior squad.

Britain won three gold medals at the 2011 event in Amsterdam, winning the women’s lightweight single scull, men’s pair and men’s lightweight pair. Those results led to Katherine Copeland, Constantine Louloudis, George Nash and Peter Chambers all breaking into the senior squad for the 2012 season after a gruelling winter of trials – and last month all four were selected for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Team manager Steve Gunn tempered expectations for this year though as, “each year’s team is completely independent from the team before”.

“It is a promising young team of rowers and as always the joy of the U23s is we don’t really know what will happen until the racing starts,” said Gunn. “We don’t know what the form is as we haven’t raced the opposition and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Kieren Emery trained with the senior squad throughout the winter after winning the U23 and Senior world titles last year and is joined in the U23 team for Trakai by Rachel Gamble-Flint, Olivia Carnegie-Brown and Michael Mottram who have all had experience this season racing at the senior world cup in Belgrade.

Emery, from Newcastle, was part of the lightweight men’s pair with Peter Chambers which won both U23 and Senior world gold last year and this season he has moved into the open-weight pair with Matthew Tarrant, a World Junior silver medallist who raced in the GB men’s four at the European Championships last September.

Gamble-Flint, from Darlington, contests the women’s single scull after reaching the semi-finals of the Olympic Qualifying Regatta in Lucerne and finishing 10th at the first senior world cup of 2012 in Belgrade.

Carnegie-Brown brings more senior world cup experience to the team, having won bronze in the women’s eight in Belgrade and finished 9th overall in a second GB pair at world cup II in Lucerne. The Oxford Brookes University rower races in the women’s pair in Trakai with her crew-mate from last year’s U23 women’s eight, Caragh McMurtry from Southampton.

Mottram, from Stoke Mandeville, finished fifth in the lightweight men’s single at the 2012 World Rowing Cup in Belgrade and competes in the same event in Lithuania.

The GB U23 women’s eight crew features 2010 World junior gold medallists Yasmin Tredell from Evesham and Bicester’s Fiona Gammond as well as two members of the crew which finished fifth at last year’s U23 Championships, Warrington’s Olivia Oakes and cox Charlotte Jackson from West Byfleet who is currently studying at Durham University.

Aberdeen’s Iona Riley, Rebecca Chin from Conwy, Josephine Wratten from Yarm, the University of Bath’s Amelda Gare and Claire McKeown from Glasgow complete the women’s eight line-up. Six of the eight rowers – Riley, Chin, Wratten, Gare, McKeown and Oates – have all come through the GB Rowing Team’s START talent ID and development programme sponsored by Siemens at various centres across the country.

Patrick Lapage, named in the GB men’s four, comes from a rowing family. His grandfather Michael Lapage won silver behind Germany in the GB men’s eight at the 1948 Olympic Games. Patrick, from Shrewsbury who is studying in America at Harvard University, won bronze at the 2011 World U23s in the men’s eight and this year contests the four with three of his team-mates from that crew – 2009 World Junior Champion Andrew Holmes from Lochwinnoch near Glasgow, Newbury’s George Rossiter and Michael Evans from Ramsbury.

Oxford’s Cameron MacRitchie has made the step up to the GB U23s this year after winning silver in the men’s eight at the 2011 World Juniors which doubled as the Olympic test event at Eton Dorney. He races with Henley’s James Edwards, Newcastle’s Samuel Arnot, Adam Janes from York, University of London trio Oliver Cook from Windsor, Ertan Hazine Maidenhead and James Cook, also from Windsor. Alex Davidson from Weybridge and cox Max Gander from Oxford complete the crew.

Another newcomer to the U23 ranks is Jack Beaumont, son of former GB international Peter Beaumont. Jack was part of the quadruple scull which won the B final of the 2011 World Juniors and races in Trakai with Loughborough student Jonathan Walton in the men’s double scull. Walton, from Leicester finished 8th overall last year in the men’s single scull.

GB will also contest the men’s quadruple scull, lightweight women’s double and lightweight men’s pair, double scull and quadruple scull

The senior members of the GB Rowing Team are currently out of the country on tough training camps ahead of the Olympic rowing regatta and GB’s Paralympic crews will also be heading overseas to complete their preparations for the Paralympic Games.
