Vets Head rowers race on flood tide
The 32nd Vesta Vets Head of the River took place on Sunday 30th March with a very strong flood tide assisting the crews that started later in the day.
Monmouth RC, who started last, were overall winners – and victorious in the Masters C category – with a time of 12:55.87 on the course from Hammersmith Bridge to Chiswick Bridge.
Second fastest overall were the Women’s Masters A crew from Tideway Scullers, clocking 13:16.47 after starting 153rd.
Masters A crew winners Thames RC, who were first off, looked hugely impressive in registering a time of 13:26.08, but in the final order of the day they came in fourth.
Crabtree, who started 99th, were Open Masters E winners in 13:29.82, Barnes Bridge Ladies/Strathclyde Park RC/Wycliffe College won Women’s Masters C in 13:30.16 and Wallingford RC/Quintin BC took Open Masters F in 13:30.82.
Upper Thames RC, who started 190th, were Women’s Masters D and Adjusted Female winners with 13:29.75 in sixth place.
Occoquan BC (US) were Open Masters G winners, tenth in 13.30.82.
“The end result is that the later you started the more assistance you got from a very strong flood tide. All the categories raced together so the category positions are meaningful. The overall positions are not as trustworthy as we would have liked” explains Chris Harrison, Chairman of the event committee, “A category ordered set will be published in due course, which we’re sure will look more reasonable than reading the overall results in isolation.”
