Slough watersports project wins bronze at National Sportivate Awards

The award was presented by Minister for Sport, Tracey Crouch MP and Paralympic superstar Dame Sarah Storey to Chris Farrell, Project Manager at British Rowing and Jamie Green, Director of SWIPE who runs the centre in Slough.

“The inspirational winners are doing amazing things … it is right that we celebrate their wonderful achievements.” Minister for Sport, Tracey Crouch

Celebrating the achievement, Jamie Green said: “To win such a prestigious award in our first year is amazing. A lot of hard work has gone into this success. Thank you to British Rowing, Sport England, Get Berkshire Active, British Canoeing and all our new partners for making this happen.”

Chris Farrell, Projects Manager at British Rowing added: “This is a huge achievement for British Rowing, British Canoeing and the Jubilee River Project. This award reflects all the hard work that has gone into the project and highlights what a successful joint partnership can achieve. I am delighted to have been apart of such a special programme and to have worked alongside Jamie.”

British Rowing, in partnership with British Canoeing support the Jubilee River Project in Slough, Berkshire. The project created the Sportivate sessions as a way of addressing the falling numbers of young people getting into watersports.  Creating a host of enticing events such as Moonlit Glow Paddles and a Watersport festival, it offers young people the chance to try a range of water based sports, and then signposts them to clubs where they can practice in the sport in the longer-term.

Director for Community Sport at Sport England, Mike Diaper, said: “The Jubilee River Project offers a taste of the thrills and spills that watersports has to offer. It also equips young people in Slough with the skills they need to take up the sport longer-term. The Jubilee River Project are truly deserving winners of this award and I wish them continued success.”

Minister for Sport, Tracey Crouch said: “These awards are a fantastic acknowledgement of the huge contribution our young people and community groups have made to the success of Sportivate. The inspirational winners are doing amazing things across a range of sports and it is right that we celebrate their wonderful achievements.”
