British Rowing Offshore and Beach Sprint Championships return to Exmouth this summer

The 2023 Championships will take place from 28-30 July

This July, British Rowing’s annual coastal competition will be returning to the tried and tested venue of Exmouth, Devon, where amateur and experienced coastal rowers alike will battle it out on the waves for the title of British Champion.

The Championships will take place on the last weekend of July (28 – 30) as a double-header. The Offshore Championships (an endurance sport, taking place over a course of 4km or 6km) will run from Friday to Saturday morning, with the Beach Sprint Championships (an adrenaline-fueled race of 500m, plus a sprint up the beach) kicking off on Saturday afternoon and running through Sunday.

It’s an incredibly exciting time for coastal rowing in the UK. The World Championships took place in Saundersfoot, Wales last October, hot on the heels of the news that Beach Sprints will be featured at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, 2026. There are high hopes that the discipline will be included in the programme for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, 2028.

The established coastal rowing community in the UK is growing rapidly and welcomes new members, with dedicated coastal clubs and traditional river rowers alike coming together to compete each year. The British Rowing Championships is a great time for young rowers to try their hand at the ‘wilder cousin’ of river rowing, especially for those hoping to represent their country in the future.
