Rebecca Shorten and Helen Glover won April trials

One of the world’s most prestigious and long-running rowing events, athletes will be wearing club colours in a nod to their own history and route to elite level.

Louise Kingsley, GB Rowing Team Director of Performance said: “Henley is an event filled with tradition and is another good opportunity for our crews to build racing experience whether at the senior level ahead of World Championships and Olympic qualification in September or for development athletes ahead of the U23 World Championships in July.

“We know how proud athletes are to have an opportunity to represent their club, pay tribute to their route to the GB team and recognise the coaches who have helped them along the way.”

James Rudkin and Tom Digby rowing in pair James Rudkin and Tom Digby finished third at April trials

James Rudkin, a Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist and current World and European Champion in the Men’s Eight will be racing alongside Will Stewart, Morgan Bolding, Jacob Dawson, Sholto Carnegie, Rory Gibbs, Tom Digby, Tom Ford and cox Harry Brightmore in the Grand Challenge Cup. James is a longstanding member of Newcastle University BC, he said: “Representing NUBC means a lot to me as a former student of Newcastle University. I think it’s important for those of us at the top of the sport to show the multitude of places we came from to get here. Pulling on my old lycra is a small way to give back to my old coach Angelo Savarino and the whole club that took me from a fresh faced 18 year old to racing at the Olympics. Rowing in the North East is a vibrant and close knit community and it feels great to bring a small part of that to the home of rowing that is Henley Royal Regatta.

He added: “This year will also be 10 years since my first Henley campaign with NUBC in the Temple as a fresher with Tom Ford who I’ll be sitting behind in the Grand this year. I’ve always loved the regatta and have been almost every year of my life, I’m still one win behind my Dad so equalling his record is definitely my aim this year!”

Women’s Four World Champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympian Rebecca Shorten will be representing Imperial College when she joins Heidi Long, Sam Redgrave and double Olympic Champion, Helen Glover in the Town Challenge Cup. Rebecca said: “Being on the GB Rowing Team, it isn’t often we all get to represent and support the clubs we row for. I look forward to Henley each year as I get to represent the club that reignited my passion for the sport of rowing.

“I am proud to be a part of Imperial College Boat Club”, she continued, “After learning to row at Methodist College Belfast, under Enda Marron, I took some time out of rowing with no plan to return. I began university close to Imperial College Boat Club and with a little persuasion I joined and started rowing again. With the support and passion of both the teammates and the coaching team which was led by Stu Whitelaw and included Josh Butler and Paddy Hudson with help from Dave Loveday and Jamie Low, I fell back in love with rowing. I owe a lot to Imperial College Boat Club and my teammates who pushed me to be where I am today. They have always supported and aided my journey through and into the senior team.”
