Sizzling racing at British Rowing Masters Championships
Monmouth RC win Victor Ludorum after a packed programme at the National Watersports Centre, Nottingham across the hottest weekend of the year so far

After 208 races on 10-11 June, the Welsh club was announced as the Victor Ludorum and winner of £1,000 prize money from sponsor Faster Masters Rowing. Monmouth’s 35-boat entry was the largest at the Championships and amassed a total of 283 points. Tideway Scullers School were second with 248 points, and Nottingham RC third with 226.
Liz Lewis, Women’s Captain at Monmouth RC, commented, “It’s been absolutely brilliant. Fantastic weather, great umpiring and great marshalling. It’s been really good to see lots of people helping too. I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped to make the event run! It was really good to have it over the two days, and to have the non-Championship events too, so we were able to bring more of our club.”
Echoing her view on the inclusion of non-Championship events, which made up nearly a third of the total programme, James Sexton-Barrow, a rower from London RC said, “It’s been really nice for the full range in our squads to come here and have a race and have a go, otherwise they would be at home missing out on that. I feel the spirit of masters rowing is more inclusive of that group as well, so it’s important for the regatta to have those events.”
PhotosLike all regattas and heads, the Championships depend on scores of volunteers for a huge list of roles including planning and management by the Organising Committee, umpiring, registration, intermediate timing, collecting lane numbers and helping with the photo finish and scoreboard. Facing a potentially critical shortage of volunteers this year, the Organising Committee appealed to participating clubs to provide volunteers for short shifts, which worked really well. So, a massive thank you to everyone who played a part in making this year’s British Rowing such a success – on and off the water – and we look forward to seeing you again on 15-16 June 2024!
