A look back on the British Rowing Junior Championships 2023: The weekend in pictures
There were rainy races and smiling faces aplenty at the national Junior Championships in Scotland, with three full days of close racing for our youngest competitors

From 14 – 16 July, over 100 clubs descended on Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell for the 2023 British Rowing Junior Championships.

Contending with some dramatic Scottish weather, the new format saw all events completed within one day, with time trials and heats in the mornings, followed by semi finals and finals in the afternoon. As is traditional with the Junior Championships, coaches received medals alongside their competitors.

The Windsor Boys’ School BC retained the Victor Ludorum Trophy they won last year, amassing 58 points across the three days of racing, ahead of Trentham BC at 44 points and Glasgow Academy with 27 points. Windsor Boys’ School BC took eight medals over the three days, with both their A and B crews triumphing in gold and silver position for the open J14 and J15 coxed quads.

It was brilliant to see so many Scottish clubs racing, with both Aberdeen Schools RA and George Watson’s College BC ranking within the top twelve clubs alongside Glasgow Academy in 2nd. Highlights included a first place finish for Aberdeen Schools RA in the women’s J18 eights, rowing through Kingston Grammar School BC in a last-second push to the line. In the women’s J18 coxless fours all three medals were won by Scottish clubs, with Aberdeen Schools RA taking both gold and bronze and a composite of Aberdeen University BC, Glasgow University BC and George Watson’s College BC taking silver.

The open J18 eights saw Reading Blue Coat BC take gold with Claires Court BC in silver and a composite of Nottingham & Union RC and Nottingham RC in bronze.

A special mention goes to the women’s 16 coxless quad composite of Sir William Perkins’s School BC and Wallingford RC who after capsizing on their way to their race and returning to the pontoons, jumped back in the boat and went on to take silver.
