Busy days ahead as juniors gather in Scotland
The 2023 British Rowing Junior Championships will be held at Strathclyde Country Park from 14-16 July.
Over 40% of the 974 entries at this year’s British Rowing Junior Championships are in the eight single sculls events. WJ15 1x is the largest category with a whopping 65 entries. OJ15 1x will be extremely hotly contested too amongst its 58 entries, as will OJ18 1x with 54. In fact, small boats sculling is very much the theme of the regatta: the second largest event is WJ15 2x with 63 entries, and the 16 singles and doubles events comprise nearly 75% of the total.
Amongst the 100+ clubs represented, Team Keane Sculling School is sending by far the biggest contingent this year. Their 48 boats will give them a strong basis from which to challenge for the Victor Ludorum trophy, but they’ll no doubt be pressed hard by Hinksey Sculling School and Wallingford RC – each with 36 entries, George Watsons College RC – the largest Scottish club with 32 boats, and 2022 Victor Ludorum winners The Windsor Boys’ School BC with 31. We’re also pleased to welcome back Calpe RC, Gibraltar, who have 13 entries.
This is the first time since 2015 that the Championships have been held in Scotland and they’ve attracted the biggest ever entry for a British Rowing Junior Championships in Scotland. As a result there will be three packed days of racing, from 9am-6pm on Friday, from 8.30-6pm on Saturday, and from 8am-5.35pm on Sunday. Each day starts with eliminators for some events and time trials for others (over 900m for J14/15 events and 1,900m for J16/18s) before semi-finals and finals over 1,000m for J14/15 and 2,000m for J16/18.
