GB Beach Sprint Coach Education Programme
Following the recent confirmation of the Beach Sprint format as part of the Commonwealth programme and the 2028 Olympic Games, an increasing number of athletes are exploring this very different type of racing. To support them, British Rowing will be running a series of webinars to help develop the coaches they need to build the coastal and beach sprint skills.
“We are aiming to develop a group of coaches with increased knowledge of the Beach Sprint format, capable of developing rowers through the GB or Home Nations Beach Sprint pathways.” Tom Pattichis, Britsh Rowing Olympic Pathways Manager
Target group: Coaches from GB Coastal Sculling Academies (or aspiring Coastal Sculling Academies) and other coaches in Scotland, Wales or England wishing to develop knowledge of the Beach Sprint format with a view to supporting rowers through the GB or Home Nations Beach Sprint Pathway
Prerequisites: Ideally coaches applying will have completed a Level 2 coaching qualification, or a Coastal Sculling Award, or can demonstrate other relevant knowledge/experience. Experience within a coastal environment is an advantage but not essential. Coaches of all backgrounds and rowing environments are welcome so long as they share an aspiration to work with others to develop the performance of the GB and Home Nations Beach Sprint teams.
Programme format: The programme will be delivered virtually through six 90 minute webinar/discussion sessions, delivered between February and April, covering the following topics:
Webinar 1 – Sculling Technique on the Sea
Webinar 2 – Slalom and Turns
Webinar 3 – Sprinting and Transitions
Webinar 4 – Boat Handling/Working with Boat Handlers
Webinar 5 – Physiology and Training
Webinar 6 – Understanding and Assessing Sea Conditions
Coaches involved in the programme will also be encouraged to attend Beach Sprint training days, trials and competitions to work with other coaches and gain further practical skills and knowledge within the format.
There is no charge for this training but places are limited.
The closing date for applications is Friday, 26 January 2024. The webinar series will begin in early February, running weekly or bi-weekly through to late March/early April.
