17 junior men and 14 junior women, including four athletes on the DiSE programme, raced in a variety of combinations in quadruple sculls, double sculls, fours, pairs, and a Men’s eight. Some events had both heat and finals, while others simply raced one-off heats without progression to finals or straight finals.

In the events that included both heats and finals, Mia Lawrence and Eloise Etherington led from start to finish to take the gold medal in the Women’s double on Saturday. Leo Hainlein, Fraser Burdett, William Harper and Elam Hughes did the same in the final of the Men’s fours. These six athletes also all enjoyed wins on the first day of racing in events run as standalone heats or straight finals – the Women’s quadruple sculls and the Men’s eight.

On Sunday, Gabriel George, Timothy Gutsev, William Harper, Elam Hughes, Edward Bayfield, Angus Gray-Cheape, Leo Hainlein, George Buckingham and cox Felix Jamieson took gold in the Men’s eight in similar style. All three finals were highly competitive, with all of the winning margins well under five seconds.

The events run as separate or straight finals on the second day saw a win for the Women’s Pair of Emily Shaw and Martha Shepherd who then joined Sophie Haisman and Acorn Cassidy in the Women’s four, who crossed the line first in their race. Harry Oliver and Fraser Burdett won their Men’s pair race.

John Layng, Under 19 GB Rowing Team Manager said, “This was a superb weekend of racing during which all the rowers learned much about themselves and gained valuable experience from the high standard of competition. This included top German composite and club crews as well as representatives of other European teams. Taking home that experience, as well as the team’s haul of 17 medals overall, will help the development of these rowers as they seek selection for a place in an U19 team in the summer.”
