GB Women’s Eight wins gold at 2024 Coupe de la Jeunesse
The team of 56 athletes also won nine silver and four bronze medals across two days of racing from 10-11 August in Racice, Czechia
The Women’s Eight of Izabella Habdank-Toczyska, Sophia Turner, Eleanor Duxbury, Louisa Molloy, Isabel Johnson, Tara Loyd, Phoebe Forward, Kloe Hunter and cox Hannah Jacobs, coached by Chris Hermes produced a superb performance on the Saturday, crossing the line over five seconds clear of Italy. On the Sunday, the GB crew had another excellent row, taking the silver medal position by a narrower margin behind the Italians.
Across the two days of racing the Men’s Four won silver on both days, while the Women’s Four and Men’s Coxed Four both upgraded their Saturday bronze medals to silver on the second day. The Men’s Double Sculls of Max Fullman and Raph Hardwick Skottowe, the Men’s Eight and the Women’s Coxed Four also all won silver on the Saturday, as did Jess Kerbiriou on the Sunday in the Women’s Single Sculls. The Men’s Quadruple Sculls and Women’s Coxed Four were the bronze medallists on the Sunday.
These results put GB second overall in the Men’s, Women’s and Overall Coupe standings behind Italy this year.
Tristan Mayglothling, Lead Coach of the GB Rowing Team for the Coupe de la Jeunesse, said, “It was a pleasure to be the Lead Coach for the Coupe this year. The racing was as hot on the lake as the temperatures were off it, and there is excitement about how this young group of athletes and coaches will progress in the coming seasons.”
Four members of the Coupe Team – Jess Kerbiriou, Bea Hughes, Thomas Patrick and Raph Hardwick Skottowe – are part of British Rowing’s Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) education programme governed by Sport England. Worth 64 UCAS points, this supports talented young athletes attending state-funded schools or sixth form colleges to combine sport and education so that they have the skills, knowledge and competence to pursue sporting excellence alongside a career.
World Rowing umpires from GB who were selected for the Coupe de la Jeunesse Jury were Clare Harvey, Ben Helm and Jen Thomson.
