British Rowing’s coach development opportunities are designed to support coaches from under-represented groups who will inspire and lead creatively within our sport. The opportunities offered will provide coaches with the experiences, networks and support they need to excel in their coaching role and beyond.

And if you’ve ever wondered how to become a rowing coach or develop so you can take on a new coaching role, these opportunities are designed for you.

We’re delighted to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 cohort!

How to apply

Head over to our Coach Development Opportunities page where you will find further information about what we are offering and the benefits to you.

Closing date for applications is 9am on Monday, 28 October 2024.

Please note: Places will be prioritised for women, coaches from a non-traditional rowing background, coaches striving to deliver something new or ground breaking, and coaches in (or aspiring to) leadership roles in community clubs.

If you don’t fit one of these categories, please still apply. Applications that are not successful this time will help us shape further development opportunities in the sport. We will respond to all applicants.

Meet George Williams (Coach Developer – Pathways)

George WilliamsThese Coach Development Opportunities are being overseen by our Coach Developer – Pathways, George Williams.

George’s role is designed to build and shape a transformative model for supporting the development of coaches, so that any individual who has the potential to coach can achieve their ambitions. George said, “I am really excited to move forward into year two and getting to know and work with another group of motivated and inspiring rowing coaches.”
George will be working to to connect coaches across all aspects of the sport and shape the system to develop a diverse rowing community across all British Rowing Regions.

Coaches this year have told us…

“It has been helpful to learn about my coaching approach and reflect on how that impacts my athletes and their development”

“It has given me the backing to try out new things and activities, almost a licence to have a resurgence of focus and energy, doing something I have been wanting to do for so long!”

Workshops run in 2024 have been based on themes requested by the coaches. Examples of these are:

  • How to observe and knowing when to intervene
  • Preparing the crew for competition
  • Self-confidence as a coach
  • Relationship building (from me to we)
  • Managing challenging conversations.
