RIP Simon Moore (1956-2024)
British Rowing was sad to hear of the death of Simon Moore of Stratford upon Avon BC and previously Auriol Kensington RC
Simon sadly passed away on 18 November after battling numerous health issues for most of this year.
He followed in his father’s footsteps as a proud member of Kensington Rowing Club and subsequently of Auriol Kensington Rowing Club after their amalgamation in 1981. He served as captain of AKRC during the late eighties. As captain, Simon was very forward thinking and advanced the club both on and off the water. He was a great champion of and instrumental in opening up AK rowing membership to women, resulting in the successes the club has seen since.
As Simon’s work took him away from London, he continued to remain active in Masters’ rowing at AK, St Neots and latterly Stratford boat clubs. Simon’s contributions to the wider rowing community have been numerous. He was an Umpire and served as Chief Marshall for Hammersmith Head as it expanded from a local to a major event on the rowing calendar.
Simon was much loved and respected on the Tideway and particularly amongst the Hammersmith clubs where he had many lifetime friends. Simon was a member of Stewards and enjoyed nothing more than the annual week at Henley Royal Regatta, cheering on AK, catching up with friends and enjoying the hospitality, all with his natural enthusiasm, joy and unique sense of humour. He is perhaps best remembered on a sunny summer’s day in Fawley Bar, beer in hand, a smile on his face and chatting about all things rowing.
