Tom Aggar was pitch perfect in Rio today, securing his arms-shoulders single scull final place by winning the repechage in style.

The Londoner, who took the inaugural Paralympic gold in Beijing eight years ago, went out hard early in the race and dominated it to the line. The USA grabbed the second qualifying slot.

“I’m not taking anything for granted in the final. It’s going to be tough”, he said.  “All credit to the American today. He fought hard for it in the first 500m, as we knew he would”.

32 year-old Aggar has continued to develop as an athlete and remain competitive despite the sport’s standards soaring since Beijing.

His coach, Nick Baker, also said:  “Everything in Tom’s boat is completely different even to London four years ago and it’s the kind of lottery investment that the GB Rowing Team enjoys that means we can remain competitive”.

Aggar became the fourth GB crew to qualify for tomorrow’s finals.  Rachel Morris, in the equivalent arms-shoulders single scull for women, the mixed double scull of Lauren Rowles and Laurence Whiteley and the reigning World Champion mixed coxed four of Grace Clough, Daniel Brown, Pamela Relph, James Fox and Oliver James, all qualified by winning their heats yesterday.

Highlights of today’s racing will be shown on Channel 4 at 18.00 BST.
