Men’s four and quad win their Worlds semis
Alex Gregory, Mohamed Sbihi, George Nash and Andrew Triggs Hodge were consummate winners of their World Championships semi-final on the Bosbaan today.
The GB Rowing Team men’s four held off a challenge from the Americans to win in 5:52.62. Australia won the opposing semi.
Graeme Thomas, Sam Townsend, Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert followed up with a win in the men’s quadruple scull in an exciting finish which saw them pull ahead of Germany and Estonia.
Their win underlined a growing consistency this season for the GB Rowing Team crew that took GB’s first World Championships medal in this boat category of all-time only a year ago in Korea. Ukraine, the European Champions. were winners of the other semi-final.
After the four’s win Sbihi said: “We expected some quality crews at this level of racing. It’s good to get a race like that in the semi-final”.
Triggs Hodge added: “It was a good race out there and to have a bit of ‘to and fro’ with the Americans. We committed to our plan and saw it through. Now we’re all set for the final”.
Charles Cousins was pleased with the quad’s staying power: “We are very happy with that race. It went well. Other crews went off a lot harder and could not sustain it”.
HIs crew-mate Graeme Thomas said: “We just seemed to have the dominant physiology in that second half. We put in a push that put us a half length up and we had the race from there”.
Sam Scrimgeour and Jono Clegg were the GB Rowing Team’s third semi-final winners in the International Class lightweight men’s pair who will race their final tomorrow.
The open weight men’s pair of James Foad and Matt Langridge also impressed, coming home second to the perennial New Zealand World Champions in their semi-final to set themselves up nicely for Saturday’s final.
Caragh McMurtry stroked the GB women’s eight into the final in second place behind Romania in today’s repechage. Their final is on Sunday.
Neither of the GB lightweight double scull crews will contest a final here. Imogen Walsh and Kat Copeland were involved in the shock of the day when they finished an agonising fourth. Having won the last two world cups, the British combination were seen as potential medallists here.
“We didn’t seem able to bring out our usual strength in the middle part of the race which left us in a difficult position in the final 500m”, said their coach Paul Reedy afterwards.
The lightweight men’s double scull of Jamie Kirkwood and Will Fletcher were fifth in their debut senior season and will contest a B final as will the women’s quadruple scull and Zak Lee Green in the lightweight men’s single who were also fifth.
“All of our boats that qualified for finals have done so well. We are obviously disappointed for the lightweight women’s double scull. Now they really need to fight to win the B final”, said Sir David Tanner, GB Rowing Team Performance Director.
In the morning’s session the GB women’s pair of Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, already Olympic Champions moved a step closer to their aim of adding a World title here by winning their semi-final in dominant style.
This evening’s session will see para-rowers in action in the Championships first finals. GB has finalists in the men’s and women’s single sculls and the mixed coxed four.

RACE REPORTS
The GB Rowing Team’s open men’s crews in action today were led off by James Foad and Matt Langridge in the men’s pair. They won silver behind the New Zealand World Champions in Lucerne at the world cup there in July and were drawn in an adjacent lane today.
This semi also featured the Italians, who were fourth in the Lucerne final, and local heroes Rogier Blink and Michel Steenman.
Foad and Langridge got a good start. They reached the 500m timing point first with the Americans second before New Zealand surged through to take the lead in the second 500m. GB led the following chevron through the halfway point with the Americans in third and the Dutch in fourth.
The positions remained unchanged as the crews reached the grandstands. Foad and Langridge looked smooth and strong as they came through. Foad took a little glance round to gauge where the Kiwi winners were before the GB duo crossed the line in second in 6:28.33. Germany won the other semi-final with Spain in second and South Africa third.
Next up for the GB open weight men’s squad were the four of Alex Gregory and Andrew Triggs Hodge – Olympic Champions in this event – and Mohamed Sbihi and George Nash, World Champions with the GB men’s eight last year.
This crew went to today’s start line unbeaten so far this season. At the finish line they had maintained that record. In between they led the race but were tangled in a battle with the USA for much of the first half before they moved out into a half-length and then three-quarter length lead just after halfway. Canada who were bronze medallists at the last world cup were third.
The positions remained unchanged with GB going over the line in 5:52.62, USA second in 5:55.53 and Canada third. Australia won the other semi-final in 5:54.39.
“I’m feeling really good. That was a great race to have”, said Nash. “It felt like a very good semi to set us up well for the final”.
Gregory added: “It was a good semi-final. We did the job. I felt like we could control what the Americans were doing”.
The GB men’s quadruple scull of Graeme Thomas, Sam Townsend, Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert, winners of the last two world cup golds, were drawn today in an adjacent lane to the Estonian crew who were silver medallists behind them in Lucerne as well as the Germans who were Lucerne finalists.
In the opening phases of the race they were fourth and then third. Russia led to halfway but then fell back with Germany coming through strongly. They were the main challengers to the British quartet whose push at 750m to go brought them smoothly into the lead from where they went on to win in 5:46.04. As anticipated Ukraine won the other semi, setting up a mouth-watering final.
Olympic champion Kat Copeland has been back in international action this season for the first time since winning gold with Sophie Hosking at London 2012. Part of a very competitive lightweight women’s training group Copeland has been competing with World 2013 finalist Imogen Walsh. The duo won European bronze and then two world cup golds earlier this season.
In today’s semi-final they were drawn alongside the defending World Champions Laura Milani and Elisabetta Sancassani of Italy who were fourth in the last world cup final. Australians Alice McNamara and Ella Flecker, silver medallists behind GB in Lucerne, were on the other side.
Walsh and Copeland were tucked behind the leading Australians in the early part of the race. Italy were well placed, with the Americans, to track the leading crews. Australia opened up a strong lead by halfway – a length up on the GB duo with Italy in third – before Copleand and Walsh put in a push to get the overlap and then cut the lead to half a length.
In the final 500m the Italians came up strongly on the British who in turn attacked the Australian lead but could not find enough to get through. Canada came flying up the grandstand side to take everyone by surprise to win in 7:04.26. Copeland and Walsh were left in an agonising fourth place and out of the final.
In the previous race the GB lightweight men’s double scull of James Kirkwood and Will Fletcher, newcomers to the squad this season, were drawn in lane five. The Italians, Micheletti and Ruta, silver medallists in Lucerne last month were drawn next to them with the Dutch Muda twins on their other side.
The early part of the race saw Italy and Germany start strongly to lead through 500. Kirkwood and Fletcher looked comfortable in the chasine pack until the race moved through 750m when the top trio of Germany, Denmark and Italy moved created a gap over the chasers. GB were lying fifth.
At the head of the field Italy and Denmark moved further out with Germany struggling to keep pace but in the sprint to the line Italy, Germany and the home nation took the honours. Kirkwood and Fletcher could not impact and were fifth.
The lightweight men’s pair of Sam Scrimgeour and Jono Clegg had earlier opened the afternoon’s programme of racing in Amsterdam. They were drawn alongside Jiri Kopac and Miroslav Vrastil of the Czech Republic who just pipped them to silver behind the defending World Champions Simon Niepmann and Lucas Tramer of Switzerland at the season’s final world cup in Lucerne last month.
Scrimgeour and Clegg took an early lead. At the first timing point they were first in 1:37.27 but were battling cheek by jowl with the Czechs with Italy in third and closing. At halfway only a few inches separated the boats with the Czech Republic leading.
The British pair were not going to give quarter. They regained the lead with the Czechs a canvas behind and then a half length as Italy moved up into second. With 1500m gone the British boat laid down a challenge to take a length out of the field before going on to win ni 6:41.26 by two lengths. Switzerland won the other semi.
Zak Lee-Green has already made an impact at these Championships. As the GB Rowing Team’s lightweight reserve he has raced in the single here and reached today’s semi-final with a strong quarter-final performance.
Drawn in lane two he had Switzerland’s Michael Schmid, the gold medal favourite, next door and his semi-final also included European Champion Pedro Fraga of Portugal
Lee-Green was lying back in a pack led by Lars Hartig of Germany for the first 500m. The newly-qualified dentist was fourth behind Slovakia but still in contention.
As the race moved past its halfway point Schmid moved into the lead whilst Lee-Green dropped back marginally but was still challenging Pedro Fraga of Portugal for fourth and fifth place. As Hartig clearly tired, Fraga came up to challenge as did Lee Green for one of the three qualifying slots with Fraga showing more strongly. Ultimately the German had enough to hold on in second bending Schmid with Fraga taking third from the fast-finishing Slovakian, leaving Lee Green in fifth and a B final at the weekend.
Only two GB Rowing Team open weight women’s crew were in action today. They were the women’s eight, racing a repechage, and the women’s quadruple scull, contesting a semi-final.
The quad of Tina Stiller, Beth Rodford, Vicky Meyer-Laker and Lucinda Gooderham. China and the USA were sitting in the favoured lanes in this semi-final as fastest qualifiers with the New Zealand crew also having shown well in the earlier rounds.
At the head of the field the Chinese and Americans set the pace with the GB boat in fifth. China stretched out their lead over the USA with New Zealand challenging them and Belarus just behind. In the second half the GB boat were unable to match the pace. They were back in sixth but moved themselves up to fifth ahead of Italy in a race won by China with the USA second and New Zealand third.
The women’s eight raced today’s repechage fresh from a confidence-boosting performance in their delayed heat in which they finished second only to the USA who have been unbeaten at World and Olympic level every year since 2006.
Coxed by Zoe de Toledo and stroked by Caragh McMurtry the eight faced Germany and Belarus who they beat in yesterday’s heat but also Romania, who beat them by a whisker in Lucerne at the final 2014 world cup last month. As well as securing a top-two finish and qualify for Sunday’s final the GB crew would want to lay down a marker for the weekend in this repechage.
The British boat started strongly and were out front quickly and were still leading by a narrow margin from Romania at the 500m mark. Germany were in third.
As the race moved through halfway and beyond GB and Romania went bowball to bowball. Nothing separated the two until Romania got its nose in front just before the 1500m point. Pride was at stake here in advance of Sunday’s final as Canada and the USA are strong in this event.
