GB Rowing Team men’s eight qualify for Worlds final in style
The GB Rowing Team men’s eight brought the curtain down on a very positive day for the British at the World Championships in Holland.
They came through the Russian crew – who had beaten them at the Europeans and a world cup earlier this year – to win their repechage by just under three seconds and qualify for Sunday’s final.
“We got off the start with much more aggression than in the heats and we weren’t going to let the Russians walk on in the early part of the race. Inch by inch we kept and stepped up our momentum”, said cox Phelan Hill of the crew which features World Champions Hill, Will Satch, Tom Ransley and twice Olympic men’s four gold medallist Pete Reed but has some newcomers on board this year and some returning previous World or Olympic medallists.
“That was definitely an improvement on the heats. We were much more cohesive and I think we are a crew that can step up through the regatta. We certainly haven’t shown all the power we’ve got yet”, said Tom Ransley in the seven seat.
Earlier six of the other seven GB crews in action moved onto the next round. The only exception was the women’s eight but they laid down a marker for later in the Championships by coming second only to the World and Olympic Champions, the USA, in their heat.
“It is always good to get the first race of the World Championships out the way as Lucerne [the season’s final world cup in July] was quite a time ago. It’s good to cement what we did in Lucerne but we haven’t shown everything yet”, said Jess Eddie one of the more experienced members of the crew.
The lightweight and open weight men’s double sculls and the lightweight single moved into semis as did Vicky Thornley in the open women’s single alongside the women’s quadruple scull whilst the lightweight women’s quad are through to Friday’s final after winning their repechage.
“On the whole we’ve had a very good day”, said GB Rowing Team Performance Director, Sir David Tanner. “Competition is getting hotter as we move towards semi-finals and finals. It was great to see our men’s eight qualifying so strongly against a more fancied crew
Tomorrow’s race programme includes an early morning semi for the Olympic women’s pair champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning. They open the are programme for the GB Rowing Team in the first race of the day at 08.30 UK Time.
All the other semi-finals start at 13.15 with British crews featuring in eight semi-finals, including the men’s four, lightweight women’s doubles scull and men’s quadruple scull amongst others. The women’s eight will race their repechage, too.
The day’s racing will finish with Para-rowing finals with Tom Aggar and Rachel Morris racing their respective single scull events and the mixed coxed four, who are defending champions, concluding the programme.

RACE REPORTS
The men’s eight brought the curtain down on today’s racing and anticipation was high for a full-on contest. With Russia drawn alongside them the scene was set for a repeat of the Lucerne world cup and European Championships finals in which Russia took silver and GB the bronze. Australia on the other side and China could not be discounted and only two could progress to the final.
Nathaniel Reilly O’Donnell, Matt Tarrant, Will Satch, Matt Gotrel, Pete Reed, Paul Bennett, Tom Ransley, Constatine Louloudis and cox Phelan Hill were out of the blocks with aggression in the early phases and did not let Russia, the early leaders, get a big advantage.
As the race moved through its middle phase the GB crew, Russia and Australia were still in contention for the two qualifying slots. From the halfway mark to the 1500m timing point the British combination moved up on Russia and then through them with Australia slipping back. GB went on to win by more than a decent margin.
John Collins and Jonny Walton were rowed out of direct semi-final qualification here in Amsterdam by just 0.04 seconds. Today the question was whether they could bounce back from such a narrow defeat after a great race and sequester one of the two qualifying slots available in today’s repechages.
Yes, was the answer. They were racing in lane three and drawn between Argentina and Serbia. By halfway the rest of the field had slipped behind leaving Serbia and GB to slug it out until Walton and Collins put in a push around 1300m gone to move clear and go on to win in 6:34.38.
The GB Rowing Team’s women’s eight were drawn in a heat with the USA – world and Olympic champions and one of the stand-out crews in world rowing. To progress to the final via the one qualifying slot available would therefore be an improbably tall order.
This race was due to run yesterday but was delayed overnight by unfair wind conditions late which caused a postponement in the regatta.
For Rosamund Bradbury, Louisa Reeve, Katie Greves, Donna Etiebet, Jessica Eddie, Zoe Lee, Polly Swann, Caragh McMurtry and Zoe Lee today’s heat was an opportunity to race to the best of their ability, lay down a marker against crews like China, Germany and the Netherlands as well as to seize a good lane draw for the ensuing repechage should the USA win as expected.
The GB women delivered everything in a race won, as predicted, by the USA. The GB crew came through strongly after the opening phases to sit ahead of a chasing three-boat pack. They reached the 100m mark with their bow ball behind the USA but ahead of the rest. By halfway they had more of a lead.
Despite considerable encouragement from both banks the home crew faded in the middle third and Germany and China were unable to make an impact on the GB boat. They took second in 6:27.67. Canada meanwhile won the other heat in an identical winning time to the USA.
Eddie said: “I think we dealt with the overnight delays well and went out to race today like any other day.
“It is always good to get the first race of the World Championships out the way as Lucerne [the season’s final world cup in July] was quite a time ago. It’s good to cement what we did in Lucerne but we haven’t shown everything yet”.
Vicky Thornley found herself today in the same quarter-final as the World Champion Kim Crow of Australia but with the top three going through to the semi-finals.
Thornley got out to a good start, leading after 150m and even when the event settled she was well placed behind Crow and ahead of the American, Genevra Stone. In the second half Thornley and Stone battled it out for 250m before the American came through whilst Thornley was well clear in third and qualified for the semi-finals.
Tina Stiller, Beth Rodford, Vicky Meyer-Laker and Lucinda Gooderham needed a bounce-back performance in today’s women’s quadruple scull repechage after a lacklustre heat. A top-three finish would see them safely through to the semi-finals.
They delivered in style by hitting the front before halfway and then stretching out their lead over the chasing Italians and Russians to win in 6:45.36. Now they race a semi-final tomorrow.
Their lightweight counterparts are through to the final here after winning their repechage today. Ruth Walczak, Ellie Piggott, Brianna Stubbs and Charlotte Taylor needed a top two finish and made sure of their progression by gradually pulling ahead of China and the USA to take the lead and then bring home the win by over a length in 6:51.38.
Charlotte Taylor set up the rhythm well that allowed the boat to start with intent and carry through to reach Friday’s final.
Jamie Kirkwood and Will Fletcher will feature in tomorrow’s semi-finals after a close-run quarter-final of the lightweight men’s double scull in which they were lying fourth for much of the first 1500m before stepping up to pull past Austria and then the early leaders New Zealand who flagged so badly in the final 500m that they were out of the top three qualifying slots by the finish. Switzerland won the race in 6:33.66 to GB’s 6:36.00.
Zak Lee-Green raced today in the lightweight men’s single scull quarter-finals from which the top three were set to qualify for the semis. Lee Green is in Holland as a racing reserve but produced a great performance today to reach the semis here, taking second place behind China’s Zhao Jingbin.
The recently-qualified dentist set out with intent, chasing the Chinese who took an early lead. Behind him some drama unfolded when the Andrew Campbell Jr caught his blade hard enough to tip out of the boat and put himself out of contention.
That might have unsettled the field around him but Zak Lee Green was well out of the danger zone and carried on closing the gap on China to take second place in 7:22.56 with Japan’s Hiroshi Nakano in third.
