All three para-rowing crews into Worlds finals
Britain is already guaranteed three final spots at the World Championships after all three GB Rowing Team para-rowing crews won their heats to qualify.
Rachel Morris, in a debut season in which she has already won a world cup medal, opened the action in the arms-shoulders women’s single scull and pulled away in the second half from the more experienced Liudmila Vauchok of Belarus to win in 5:53.14.
“It felt good today and it’s great to get into the final. I’m really proud of that. We’ve just come off a really useful block of training and I feel that I’ve stepped on since the world cup in Aiguebelette”, said Morris.
Norway’s Birgit Skarstein looks the stand-out performer in this event, having won the opposing heat in a much faster time. The fascinating battle may therefore be behind her in the final.
Tom Aggar gave himself a confidence boost by winning his heat and taking the lone qualifying slot for the final of the arms-shoulders single scull. He put clearwater between himself and Russia’s Alexey Chuvashev to win in 5:09.48 on the 1000m course. Australia’s Erik Horrie, the defending World Champion, won the other heat to qualify.
Aggar said: “He (the Russian) took bronze ahead of me in 2012 and in 2013 and we have been very close. To win by that distance gives me confidence. It’s a good benchmark to judge my performance by.
“We have been working on new ideas in training to build on the good work done before”.
The GB Rowing Team mixed coxed four rounded off the successful morning session by winning an exciting race against a new American crew. These two boats were out front after halfway. The USA quartet – three of whom are unknown at international level – flew off the start and kept up the pace.
Grace Clough, Pamela Relph, Dan Brown, James Fox and cox Oliver James kept their nerve and came through strongly in the final 300m as the USA’s energy faded.
“It’s really good that there is another hot contender in our event as it means that we don’t rest on our laurels”, said Paralympic Champion Pam Relph. “It’s also good that we took the only qualifying slot. It means that all the other crews bar us and the Italians have another day to race before Thursday whilst it’s another day for us to rest up and get ready”.
“This morning was an excellent showing from our para-rowing squad. It’s clear that the two scullers have come on significantly since the world cup in June. I’ve never seen Tom Aggar scull better”, said GB Rowing Team Performance Director, Sir David Tanner.
The squad’s coaches have certainly raised the bar. The coaching team is led by Tom Dyson, now also coaching the mixed coxed four, and joined in the team by newcomer Nick Baker since Mary McClachlan moved to work with the Irish team.
