James started rowing when he was seven, coached by his dad. He didn’t take it too seriously at first and just enjoyed getting out on the water.

At his local rowing club, Hollowell Scullers in Northamptonshire, he gradually warmed to the sport and competed in several GB junior teams before attending Newcastle University to study History and Politics. Here his interest in politics blossomed and alongside representing the University in sport he went on to graduate with a Masters degree before joining the National Training Centre at Caversham.b He made his Olympic debut at teh delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, winning bronze in the Men’s eight.

James enjoys the outdoor lifestyle that comes with the sport, especially mountains and beautiful early morning sunrises.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Rowing Regatta, James won gold in the Men’s eight in superb style.
