Nominations open for 2017 Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2017 Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards – paying tribute to the unsung heroes of the sport

The annual Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards are now open for nominations. This is your chance to recognise your volunteering or coaching hero for their outstanding contribution to rowing.

It could be anyone from the rowing community that you think has contributed to the sport beyond what is expected and is an unsung hero. We look forward to hearing about all the amazing people in our sport, so make sure you nominate them now.

Here are the categories for nominations and information on how to apply.

Regional winners will be selected in the following categories:

Volunteer Awards

Volunteer of the Year Award

This award is for the volunteer that has contributed most significantly to rowing either contributing to the wider rowing community or with performance.

The criteria below should be used as guidance for nominations:

  • Evidence of significant involvement, time and effort in rowing
  • Examples of what singles out this individual
  • Positive influence to their peer group by demonstrating an outstanding leadership role
  • Must be a volunteer who receives no financial reward for services
  • Demonstrates a strong alignment with the core values of their club and British Rowing

Rising Star Award

This award is for the young volunteer that has contributed most significantly to rowing either contributing to the wider rowing community or with performance.

The criteria below should be used as guidance for nominations:

  • Made significant progress in the sport of rowing
  • Has shown exceptional dedication and commitment
  • Exceeded expectations in their performance
  • Positive influence to others by demonstrating an outstanding leadership role
  • Demonstrated a strong alignment with the core values of their club and British Rowing
  • Must hold a British Rowing Junior Membership
  • The rising star is doesn’t need to have any formal sports qualifications

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award will be presented to an exceptional candidate to recognise his or her achievements through a lifetime dedication to the sport.

The criteria below should be used as guidance for nominations:

  • Minimum of 15 years of dedication to rowing
  • Evidence of dedication to rowing either at club level, regionally or nationally
  • Evidence of achievement over a sustained period with a number of different areas
  • Examples of innovative practice
  • Example of sustained programmes which have enabled the work to be continued
  • Demonstrated a strong alignment with the core values of their club and British Rowing
  • Positive influence to others by demonstrating an outstanding leadership role

Nominations for individuals who are predominantly coaches should be submitted for Coach Awards below.

Coach Awards

Education Performance – awarded to the coach who has made the most significant impact on the performance of either an individual or a group of rowers at national level events such as BUCS Regatta, European Universities, The National Schools’ Regatta, The British Rowing Championships, Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta during the 2016/2017 season. This award is open to all rowing coaches working in the education sector, including schools, further or higher education.

Open to either paid or volunteer coaches working with rowers in full-time or part-time education.

Education Development – awarded to the coach who has made the most significant impact on their educational institution by providing opportunities for those new to the sport to become involved in rowing. We are looking for programmes that have built on good coaching practices, drawn on the resources available to them, such as the Learn to Row programmes and have led to a sustainable increase in membership. This award is open to all rowing coaches working in the education sector, including schools, further or higher education.

Open to either paid or volunteer coaches working with rowers in full-time or part-time education.

Club Performance – awarded to the coach who has made a significant impact on the performance of either an individual or a group of athletes involved in higher level club performance. This could include coaching juniors, seniors, adaptive rowers or masters at higher level competitions, such as The National Schools’ Regatta, Marlow Regatta, the Metropolitan Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta, Henley Women’s Regatta, The British Rowing Championships and World Masters.

Open to club volunteer coaches.

Club Development – awarded to the coach who has made the most significant impact on their local community by providing opportunities for new groups of people to become involved in the sport of rowing. We are particularly looking for programmes that have built on good coaching practices, drawn on the resources available to them, such as the Learn to Row programmes, and have led to a sustainable increase in membership at local clubs.

Open to all volunteer coaches.

Coaching Team – awarded to the team that has made the most significant impact on the performance and/or development of a group of participants.

Open to coaching teams and may include a maximum of one employed coach.

Notes
  • All those nominated in the coaching categories must hold a current Silver, Gold or Platinum British Rowing membership.
  • British Rowing employees are not eligible for these awards.
  • All coaches nominated must have a coaching qualification relevant to rowing and recognised by British Rowing. The only exception to this is when a member of a team nominated in the Coaching Team Award category is being led or mentored by a suitably qualified coach.
  • All those coaches nominated who are coaching junior crews must have current DBS clearance with British Rowing.
  • Each region will select one winner for each of the categories in the Volunteer Awards and advise British Rowing. British Rowing will organise certificates and badges for all regional winners.

British Rowing will select the overall top three of each Volunteer Award category. The National Coaching Committee panel will select an overall top three from the coaching categories.

The top three of each category will be invited to an awards event hosted by the Chairman of British Rowing.
