Success for Great Britain rowers at Munich Junior Regatta
Strong performances across the two days of racing at the Munich Junior Regatta gives Great Britain solid start to 2018 international racing season
The GB Rowing Team started its international season in impressive fashion at the Munich Junior Regatta.
All members of the men’s squad who travelled to Germany came home with a medal, with particularly strong performances from the men’s eight, who stormed to victory on each day.
The regatta on the Munich Olympic course saw over 900 athletes from 15 countries competing in an event that forms part of the German selection process for the summer of racing.
The JW4- crew of Isabel Jonsson, Olivia Caesar, Mary Wright and Celia Matthews improved on their fifth place finish on Saturday to take the win on Sunday.
Lottie Orr and Georgie Robinson Ranger just missed out on a medal in the JW2x on Saturday, before moving to the quad with Isabel Lack and Natasha Strudwick, winning the B final by a length.
The JM4x crew, consisting of Victor Kleshnev, James Cartwright, Jake Offiler and Bryn Ellery, took a fine bronze on Sunday, with Kleshnev already having collected a silver in the single on Saturday. The Maidenhead RC youngster was pipped to gold by World Junior silver medallist Moritz Wolff.
Jake Swann, Robert Powell, Connor Sheridan and Dominic Sullivan took gold in the JM4- by over a length in a strong field, while Theo Darlow and Michael Dalton were second to Croatia’s World Championship-winning Loncaric in the JM2-.
The men’s eight raced on both days and returned with two wins. Saturday’s crew (Jake Swann, Patrick Craig, Max Shakespeare, Robert Powell, Archie McChesney, Maximilian Ridgwell, Dominic Brown, Matthew Heywood and Scott Cockle) cruised over the line five seconds ahead of Poland, while Sunday’s eight (Jake Swann, Patrick Craig, Archie McChesney, Theo Darlow, Michael Dalton, Robert Powell, Connor Sheridan, Dominic Sullivan and Scott Cockle) took the gold by nearly a length in the prioritised race.
GB’s juniors travel to Racice in August for the World Rowing Junior Championships, where they will be aiming to better the historic two gold medals won in Trakai in 2017.
