Copus and Board stage comeback to win light men’s double gold in Australia

Benjamin Board and Jamie Copus came back from a length down to win gold in the lightweight men’s double scull at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival today in 6:6.67, prompting team manager Richard Boulton to liken them to the GB Rowing Team’s 2008 Olympic Champions Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase.

“It was a very exciting race and reminiscent of Hunter and
Purchase’s 2011 World Championships victory”, said Boulton of the duo’s victory of New Zealand today.

“We knew that if we rowed well we would have a very, very good chance of winning”, said Copus a 2011 World Junior Championships silver medallist in the eight. “So we stuck to our guns and just held on there and when chose the moment to go we just went and didn’t stop until we were ahead”.

Britain, competing here as part of a Team GB set-up, also took a one-two in the men’s single scull with Leander’s Jack Beaumont coming home ahead of his team-mate Luke Moon of Tideway Scullers.

The fourth medal of the day, a silver, came courtesy of Anastasia Chitty and Nicole Lamb in the women’s pair.

The medals were a bonus for a team which is in Australia soaking up the kind of learning curve that was such a benefit to 2012 Olympic champion Kat Copeland who raced in the same event in 2009 and who said that the whole experience – kitting out, opening ceremony, being part of a multi-sport team – helped her in London.

With temperatures down to 28 from a record 48 degrees in Sydney two days ago and with a bit of wind and even light rain, the conditions probably made the British feel at home today as they took on the grueling challenge of three 2000m races in one day.

Tomorrow’s racing sees the bigger boats in action and Boulton says that it is a case of the unknown. He was impressed with New Zealand in particular today and knows that they are strong.

The format of this event is different to many others. GB Rowing Team crews are racing 12 events (six for men, six for women) with each rower racing in three different events at the five-day festival of elite youth sport.

The festival, held every four years at the Sydney Olympic venues across 17 sports, including rowing, has seen past winners go on to become Olympic Champions.
