Tributes to Clare College cox Rebecca Chamberlin
It is with great sadness that British Rowing reports the death of Cambridge University student and British Rowing member Rebecca Chamberlin, following a car crash on Wednesday (18th April).
Rebecca was a third-year English student at Clare College, and coxed for the senior men’s crew.
Tributes have been paid to the 21-year-old over the weekend, with Professor Tony Badger, Master at Clare College, calling Rebecca a ‘delight to teach’.
“Our thoughts are with her family and all her friends at this very sad time,” he told www.cambridge-news.co.uk.
“Rebecca made a huge impression on all the teachers, staff and colleagues who knew her. She was an excellent student of English, who was a delight to teach and extremely popular.
“She was much-loved by her fellow students,” Professor Badger added, “and was just a delightful and giving presence in the college community.
“We will miss her so very much, and will do all we can to support each other during the coming weeks.”
Rebecca was travelling to a rowing training camp when the collision occurred on the M40, in which three other members of Clare College BC sustained minor injuries.
“She was a lovely, vivacious girl who had an excellent rapport with her team,” said Ruth Howlett, women’s captain of Champion of the Thames Rowing Club – which shares a boat house with Clare College BC.
“She was very bright and was gorgeous – it is very sad.”
