About Trafford Rowing Club

Trafford Rowing club is a community rowing club of around 200 members based in south Manchester on the Bridgewater Canal.

Trafford Rowing club wants to cultivate a life-long love of rowing for all of our members, to allow all of our members to enjoy the sport and support those that want to compete at the highest level they can.

The club is split roughly 50 – 50 between juniors and adults.

Our junior squad has a paid for coaching team and performs at a high level with a number of crews representing the North West and consistently performing at A/B final level at national events.

Our senior squads (both open and masters) historically have been run by volunteers however we have just been through a successful trial period of paid for coaching and we now want to create a long term structure that supports growth and quality across the senior squads.

Job Description

Trafford Rowing Club are looking for coaches to work, primarily at the weekend, to support our men’s, women’s and development crews underneath our director of rowing.  In total we require coaches to run 32 hours of coaching cover per weekend. Optional occasional hours during the week may be available.

Saturday men’s squad – 4 hours 8am – 12 midday Sunday men’s squad – 4 hours 8am – 12 midday Saturday women’s squad – 4 hours 8am – 12 midday Sunday women’s squad – 4 hours 8am – 12 midday Saturday development squad – 4 hours 12 midday – 4pm Sunday development squad – 4 hours 12 midday – 4pm

Depending on the applicants the role could be split between 2 or 3 individuals.

The coaches will work underneath the director of rowing. The squads are roughly 30 members each with age ranges from 18 to 60+.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and support a life-long love for rowing
  • Adhere to targeted training plans suitable for all squads as agreed with the club captain and director of rowing
  • Carry out sessions in accordance to agreed session plan structure
  • Oversee the development and performance of athletes
  • Foster a competitive culture that rewards training and commitment where applicable
  • Implement a consistent club rowing style
  • Support other coaches
  • Ensure athletes’ wellbeing

Personal attributes

It is essential that the session coaches have the self-confidence to work with and direct the squad and have great communication skills to explain their plans to squad members. They must be able to support the growth of the rowers with ideally a track record experience of rowing or coaching to a high standard.

A desire to succeed whilst understanding their responsibility for the mental and physical welfare of the rowers and coaching team is also important.

Qualifications

Required

  • Rowed / coached previously

Advantageous

  • Level 2 coaching qualification
  • Driving Licence
  • First Aid
  • RYA powerboat level 2
  • Basic Boat Maintenance skills

Other information

Trafford Rowing Club will look to support the right candidates through BR Club Coach qualification, first aid and strength and conditioning courses after a trial period and will provide welfare training if the successful application doesn’t have relevant qualifications.
