GB Rowing Team’s junior women’s quad through to World semis
The GB Rowing Team’s junior crews had their first taste of racing at the World Rowing Junior Championships on home water at Eton Dorney this evening.
For Katie Bartlett , Jessica Leyden, Klara Weaver and Lucy Burgess that meant victory in their opening heat of the junior women’s quadruple scull.
The quartet qualified for the semi-finals with an impressive second-half performance to overhaul Italy during a heat in which a strong Romanian crew caught a crab and finished fourth behind New Zealand in third.
In glorious sunshine, the junior men’s four were not so successful. They led for the first 1500m of a thrilling heat after an even start at the Olympic venue before finishing third to Belarus and Croatia.
The young British boat, including Callum Jones who celebrated his 16th birthday yesterday with William Kenworthy, Adam Janes and Vassilis Ragoussis, will now contest the repechage tomorrow to try and reach the semi-finals.
Britain has six more crews racing at the 48-nation event which features 578 rowers and is doubling as the test event for organisers of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“The event has certainly kicked off and the two races today helped us answer questions about the performance of those two particular boats. Now we are looking forward to our other six crews laying down a marker from tomorrow onwards”, said GB Rowing Team manager John Layng today.
The senior GB Rowing Team, sponsored by Siemens and Lottery funded, named its crews last month for the senior World Championships in Bled, Slovenia, at the end of August – which double as qualifying for London 2012.
They have now headed off on a series of tough, summer training camps ahead of the event in Slovenia while the Junior GB crews test out the race facilities at the Olympic and Paralympic rowing venue.
Thursday’s racing at the WRJC runs from 9:30am to 1:15pm.
