Louloudis and Nash are called up for Lucerne
Constantine Louloudis and George Nash have been rewarded for the early-season form which took them to fourth place in the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials with a call-up to race at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne.
The duo, who are still aiming for this year’s World U23 team but who have shown Olympic contender potential for Rio 2016 if not before, will join an event which already features world silver medallists and Olympic men’s four gold medallists Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed.
Londoner Louloudis and Nash, from Guildford, competed for rival outfits in this year’s Boat Race but came together for the national Trials. They are both former world junior champions in the men’s four, have each won world U23 medals and learnt to row at school.
“Both of these rowers have shown their pedigree at junior and U23 level and impressed at the GB Senior Trials in April. They will want to use this opportunity to prove themselves in the senior arena now that the exam season has finished. They are certainly names on the GB Rowing Team radar for the future”, said GB Rowing Team Performance Director David Tanner.
For Reed and Hodge, Lucerne represents a chance to take on World Champions Eric Murray and Hamish Bond for the first time in 2011 after losing out so narrowly to the New Zealanders on their home water last Autumn.
Matt Langridge, Richard Egington, Tom James and Alex Gregory will, meanwhile, hope to repeat their gold medal winning performance from the first world cup in Munich in the face of more varied opposition with New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the USA joining the mainly European field in Munich.
Whilst the whole British team were disappointed to have missed the season’s second world cup in Hamburg, Alex Partridge from the men’s eight might have been secretly relieved. He was at home when his daughter was born 10 days ago without needing a last-minute dash back to the UK.
Partridge, bowman of the British men’s eight in Beijing, has joined a crew with regular podium aspirations having taken world championships silver in New Zealand and silver once more in Munich, beaten only by the German world champions.
Britain’s men’s sculling squad for Lucerne remains unchanged.
The ‘Red Express’ men’s double of red-heads Marcus Bateman and Matt Wells would like to slay the ghost of their defeat to Kiwis Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan in last year’s World Championships final despite taking a significant early-race lead. Theirs will be a tough field, though, in Lucerne. Australia has re-formed its 2008 Olympic champion double as well as the 2009 world champions from Germany showing form already with gold from Munich in May.
There are no changes to the men’s quadruple scull crew – Tom Solesbury having joined the boat this year to race with Sam Townsend, Stephen Rowbotham and Bill Lucas. This crew will go to Lucerne with the benefit of a first-class tune up at Henley in a field containing both the world and Olympic champions.
By contrast Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, in the women’s pair, are the only unchanged British open-weight women’s crew in Lucerne. No longer “unknowns” as last year, the world silver medallists from Penzance and Lossiemouth respectively showed, by winning in Munich and at the Amsterdam International Regatta last weekend, that they have continuing medal potential.
Anna Watkins has recovered from a frustrating back niggle to train recently with Katherine Grainger. So the world champions will have their first outing in 2011 together at Lucerne.
With Fran Houghton sidelined by injury, the GB Rowing Team women’s quad will have a fresh look in Lucerne with the addition of Mel Wilson – winner of double scull gold with Grainger in Munich – to the established line-up of Beth Rodford, Debbie Flood and Annabel Vernon.
Vicky Thornley switches back from sculling to sweep to join the women’s eight in Lucerne. Jo Cook is back in the bow seat in a crew stroked by Lindsey Maguire.
Zac Purchase is closing back on full fitness from a post-viral episode but is not ready to compete in Lucerne. So, Adam Freeman Pask is getting the chance to train with and race with world and Olympic champion Mark Hunter.
Hester Goodsell and Sophie Hosking will race the lightweight women’s double scull. They won in Munich and again at the Amsterdam International Regatta – the latter in the open weight women’s double scull event which included a strong Canadian combination. They should go to Lucerne, therefore, brimful of confidence.
World champion Richard Chambers will race for the first time at senior world cup level in a crew with his brother Peter who steps in to substitute for the injured Chris Bartley in the lightweight men’s four alongside Paul Mattick and Rob Williams.
