Hours:

The full-time role is seasonal and will therefore require flexibility. The role will also involve weekend working. Exact hours will be outlined in advance by the Director of Rowing and Time off in Lieu will be given where these are exceeded. Time off can be taken as agreed by the Director of rowing during the holiday period.

The successful candidate must be available to work on Saturdays and occasional Sundays to coach, able to transport all pupils to sporting fixtures and be willing to escort pupils to and from the boat house via train daily.

The Role 

·       The Assistant Head of Rowing will lead the program for boys & girls in J15 at Emanuel School Boat Club in their first year.

·       The successful applicant will be fully engaged in all levels of rowing at Emanuel School Boat Club. The emphasis is on providing quality coaching to all junior rowers specifically Junior rowers at Emanuel under the direction of Director of Rowing.

·       This is an opportunity for a full-time coach who is looking to assist in building a positive and professional environment at E.S.B.C.

·       The role includes the running and organising of the Summer Rowing courses In July and August.

·       The role requires the candidate to assist with aspects of rowing including implementing and designing a training program for the junior sections of the boat club.

·       The role requires the Assistant head of rowing to organise and run the junior Summer Rowing courses in July and August.

·       Assisting the Director of Rowing with day-to-day running of the Boat Club including but not limited to: administration, assisting with the organisation of timetables, regattas and training camps, and assisting with minor equipment maintenance.

·       The candidate will work closely with the Director of Rowing to deliver rowing sessions safely and efficiently by ensuring boats are clean, rigged and routine and preventative maintenance tasks are carried out.

·       The candidate will have the ability to work in a team with the other rowing coaches and be willing to coach any squad crew as required by the Director of Rowing.

·       The role requires coaching during all Games lessons, before school, and Saturdays as required by the Director of Rowing.

The Department

Sport is a major part of both curricular and co-curricular life at Emanuel School and plays an essential role in the physical, emotional and social development of every pupil in the school.

We are proud of the sport and rowing facilities and prospects of our school. The support, expertise and talent provided by the Sports and PE Departments on a variety of offsite facilities provides a positive experience to every pupil at Emanuel. Our facilities at the school and Boat House are outstanding, with an impressive fleet of boats and the School has a dedicated rowing coaching team. There is newly built a performance gym at the boat house for pupils, including 36 rowing machines split between the school and the boat house.

Pupils begin rowing in year 7 when they will be given a 6 week “taster” experience in rowing. There are three summer courses for junior rowers at Emanuel. Senior rowing at Emanuel moves from strength to strength and the ideal candidate will be a role model to all aspiring rowers at Emanuel.

Emanuel has a rich history in rowing with wins at the Schools Head of the River and Henley Royal Regatta. In recent years, girls & boys have produced solid results with two rowers in the GB process and 7 Eights racing at the Schools Head of the River , 5 crews finishing in A finals at National Schools and a win for our boys Pair. Our aim is to be one of the top performing co-ed rowing schools. The rowing department has a thriving Parents’ Association which raises funds to support our rowers and there is a dynamic and friendly Sports Department in the school.

Main Responsibilities: 

 

•         To consult with fellow rowing coaches and the Director of Rowing daily and work on building an effective and dynamic rowing environment for pupils.

•         To work with the Director of rowing to design and implement land training and Strength & Conditioning sessions for the junior section of the boat club.

•         To assist coaches of younger age groups with technical framework & programming with the aim of raising achievement and profile of all rowers at Emanuel.

•         Be confident organising equipment, carrying out minor repairs & equipment checks at the Boathouse in conjunction with the Boat House Manager.

•         To take a proactive role in ensuring Rowing equipment is packed up at the end of each session, stored correctly and any repairs reported to the Boat House Manager.

•         Attend coaches’ meetings throughout the season and review progress of the season.

•         Keep records of programme, goals, pupils progress, testing, and reviews.

•         To assist the other coaches at regattas and head races, both rigging boats and boating pupils for races.

•         Demonstrate competence and knowledge of the British Rowing online Entry system and incident reporting system.

•         To follow races and give relevant feedback to coaches and athletes as required.

•         To demonstrate excellent knowledge of rowing and sculling techniques.

•         To demonstrate knowledge of the principles of boat rigging.

•         To provide support to pupils and feedback on pupils’ conduct as required.

•         Ensure attendance procedures are followed and registers accurately recorded.

•         To assist in transport of boats to from regattas, involvement in towing trailers to and from regattas, and assist with their loading and unloading.

•         Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety, monitoring and dealing with hazards by ensuring equipment is tidied away neatly.

•         Where necessary, to undergo on the job training and/or to attend INSET training outside the School where appropriate to increase competence, proficiency and safety awareness.

•         Any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of Rowing, the Headmaster and/or Bursar in association with the above role.

•         Playing an active and full part in the life of the school community.

•         Complying with relevant Emanuel policies and procedures, including safeguarding procedures, at all times.

•       RYA Powerboat Qualification would be a significant advantage. (Essential)

•       The ideal candidate will have previous experience of coaching medal standard crews, at a national level including the National Schools Regatta. (Desirable)

•       The role requires the candidate to drive a minibus and on occasion, tow a trailer or be willing to acquire these qualifications as soon as possible after starting. (Essential)

•       A commitment to the Safeguarding and wellbeing of pupils.  (Essential)

•       Highly motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated to ensuring the best outcome for the crew. (Essential)

•       Personable, confident, self-motivated and able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. (Essential)

•       A specialist Sports and/or relevant British Rowing coaching qualification (Essential)

•       Experience of working with children or young people. (Desirable)

•       Hold a clean Drivers Licence and be able to drive school minibuses as well as tow a trailer would be a significant advantage. (Desirable)

•       Able to deal politely and effectively with staff, pupils, parents and the general public. (Essential)

•       Understand fully the requirement to promote the aims and ethos of the School and understand the nature of independent education and of the high expectations within the sector. (Essential)

•       Awareness of Health and Safety issues (First Aid training will be provided). (Essential)

•       Good GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications in English Language and Mathematics. (Essential)

•       Ability and willingness to learn on the job and attend INSET as necessary. (Essential)

•       Excellent organisational skills and be flexible and adaptable to meet ever-changing needs and priorities. (Essential)

•       Capable of working independently and as part of a team. (Essential)

•       Ability to provide insight and input as well as take direction. (Essential)
