Team GBR announced for World University Rowing Championships
A team of 32 athletes will be travelling to Szeged, Hungary to take part in the 11th World University Rowing Championships. The GBR rowing team will be competing against crews from 27 other nations between Friday 13th and Sunday 15th August. The 2010 squad includes many athletes who gained medals whilst representing Great Britain at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Belarus last month.
Jamie Kirkwood, a sports scholar at Roehampton, has already had a fantastic season having won the Visitors Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta and a gold medal in the Lightweight Men’s 4s at the Under 23 Championships. Jamie will compete in the Lightweight Men’s Double sculls with partner Sam Scrimegour from Strathclyde who won a bronze medal in the lightweight quads at the Under 23 regatta.
The Men’s 8 contains a wealth of experience where Matt Tarrant, Karl Hudspith and Scott Durant who won a bronze medal in the same event at the World Under 23s will be joined by Henry Pelly, George Nash and Fred Gill who were part of this year’s victorious Light Blue boat from Cambridge. Along with crewmates Stephen Feeney (who has represented Great Britain numerous times including last year at the Senior World Championships) and Matt Rossiter (who won a silver medal in the coxless four at the Under 23 regatta, they will be coxed by Max Gander from University of London who steered the Under 23 coxed four to a bronze medal last month.
Team GBR will also field a strong crew in the Women’s fours with Leonara Kennedy, Monica Relph and Emily Taylor who were in the Gold medal winning 8 at the 2009 U23 Championships. They are joined by Zoe Lee from Kings College, London who returns this year following a back injury in 2009.
