Star Club – Paid Part-Time Junior Coach
Background information:
Star Club has operated from the Batt’s Ford site, in the centre of Bedford, since 1958. It has a history of international representation at both Junior and Senior levels, and a reputation for high level continuous achievement in the sport of rowing. In keeping with this, Star Club’s aim is to develop and support crews and scullers to compete at their full potential, and to provide facilities for the wider community to train and enjoy participation in the sport of rowing.
General purpose of the position:
You will share your passion and enthusiasm for rowing by engaging and inspiring young people in both land and water-based rowing programmes, ensuring high standards of training and welfare.
Lead the club’s junior rowing programme – ensuring quality coaching and structure is provided for all of our junior members – generally weekend mornings and week-day sessions running directly after school hours.
Lead and develop a community outreach programme – working with local state schools and community groups in offering a land and water-based rowing programme and promoting the club and the sport of rowing within the wider community – generally week-day sessions run during school hours.
Contribute to the club’s performance programme – working with the club captain to implement a development pathway framework and structure that leads to success on the water – generally week-day evenings after coaching the junior squad.
Remuneration:
The salary is £18,000 per annum, pro rata (£30,000 full time) with a target working of around 25 hours per week to be discussed with the successful applicant. This will include an annual leave entitlement of 25 days.
Detailed Responsibilities:
- Leading the club’s junior rowing programme
- To define and lead the coaching delivery across the junior squad, working closely with the Junior Lead and volunteer coaches to deliver the junior programme.
- To plan and provide an integrated training programme tailored to support athlete development and performance at all levels e.g. local, national, international.
- To maintain centralised training records to evidence athlete progression and development.
- Provide regular communication with athletes/parents, including liaising with the junior lead.
- To drive continuous learning through Coach Education/Mentoring of volunteer coaches, leading and promoting courses and workshops
- To accompany athletes to head races, regattas, trials and training camps
- To arrange with the wider club equipment to events using the relevant systems
- Develop strategies for talent identification and recruitment of more junior members into the club.
- Design and deliver `Learn to Rows programmes for intake into the junior squad (Half-terms, Easter and Summer)
- Liaising with the Club Treasurer to pursue funding and grant opportunities to support young people’s development.
- To proactively engage with current club sponsors to promote junior rowing.
- Leading the club’s community outreach programme
- To continue to develop partnerships within selected local schools who are keen to engage so as to promote the sport of rowing to their students and the community
- Pursuing opportunities to partner with new organisations, meeting with stakeholders, and working closely with the club’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) officer to identify projects
- Develop long term plan for indoor and online rowing competitions in the local area.
- Providing opportunities for schools’ participants to experience rowing on the water, running coached sessions in conjunction with PE staff.
- Working with the EDI officer and treasurer to pursue funding opportunities related to community outreach work.
- Contribute to the club’s performance programme
- To work with the Club Captain and Senior Squad leaders to develop a programme that recognises the performance targets of all the club’s squads.
Key skills required:
- Proven coaching expertise in sculling and rowing
- Project management/organisation skills
- Proven ability to engage and communicate with diverse audiences in a clear concise manner
- Ability to use software tools /applications to support data management and effective communication.
- Essential experience and qualifications:
- Experience of schools-based rowing/sculling programmes
- Experience of developing athletes from first-entry to sport of rowing
- Ability to plan, collaborate, organise and deliver programmes
- Enhanced DBS
- First aid qualification
- Current clean full driving licence.
Desirable experience and qualifications:
- British Rowing Coaching qualification, minimum UKCC Level 2 (or equivalent experience)
- Driving licence with the ability to tow trailers
- UKCC or equivalent qualification in strength & conditioning
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 or international equivalent.
