Oxford Academicals Rowing Club – Women’s Coach

Oxford Academicals Rowing Club (OARC, or Accies for short) is a friendly, supportive and flexible rowing club, with a good social side and an adult-only membership across three squads: men, women and development (mixed). We are one of the three “town” clubs in Oxford and, despite the name, have no affiliation with university or college rowing. Our women’s squad has over 50 wonderful members and we are looking for enthusiastic and committed coaches to help us progress.

About Us

Our rowers range from novices to those with decades of experience, and include people who take a more recreational approach as well as those wishing to train hard and compete. We recognise that our members have commitments away from rowing so we don’t have set crews outside of specific race preparation. We aim to row the best we can despite the limitations thrust upon us by adult life! We are proud of the inclusive and integrated nature of our squad and maintaining this ethos is important to us.

In a typical year, we would be looking to race at Wallingford, Reading, Quintin, Abingdon, and WeHoRR/ Vets Head through the winter. Summer involves a mixture of local (Henley Town and Visitors’, Oxford Royal) and weekend camping regattas (Ironbridge, Peterborough) over the summer. Depending on commitment and ability of those wishing to race, we also support rowers looking to enter higher-level regattas including Met and Henley Women’s/Masters. We put out both sculling and sweep crews.

About You

• You must be happy to coach a broad spectrum of abilities across the squad
• Ideally, you will have experience of rowing and/or coaching outside of collegiate
rowing.
• Work with our squad captains to develop overarching training plans for season
• Provide feedback to squad captains, and input to (racing) crew selection
• Develop high-level outing plans for uncoached outings
• Advise on and help with rigging
• RYA Level 2 desirable

Practicalities

Coaching will primarily be from the bank on the Isis in Oxford (Head of the River to Iffley Lock), but, occasionally, coaches may be requested to accompany outings outside of Oxford, or potentially to join us on training camps (we run a very successful trip to Seville in February each year).

Coaches provide their availability each week and can be flexible as to which outings they sign up to attend.

We currently offer the following outings:
Tues 0630/1815
Weds 1815
Thurs 0630
Fri 1815
Sat 0800/1015
Sun 0720 (Heads)/1015
We aim to be off the water by 0800 on weekday mornings. We often go to the pub after evening outings for a further debrief… When the clocks change, we stop evening outings. Morning and weekend outings run year round.

The club will pay coaching fees, on a per-session basis, invoiced by the coaches in arrears at the end of each calendar month.
A character reference from a previous club welfare officer or captain will be required before an appointment is made.

Application Dates: From Thursday 24th August 2023 to Sunday 17th September 2023
