Small changes only for Munich World Cup

GB Rowing has tinkered at the margins of the successful maiden ship it launched onto the 2009 rowing world cup circuit two weeks ago in Banyoles, Spain, as it prepares for the Munich leg from June 19-21, 2009.

That ship delivered a strong medal tally but heightened opposition from a larger number of nations is expected in Munich before the world cup finals next month in Lucerne and the World Championships in Poland in late August.

"We had some marvellous results in Banyoles and won the overall world cup points tally there but we don’t expect such a straightforward ride in Munich", said David Tanner, GB Rowing Performance Director.

Peter Reed and Andrew Triggs Hodge will once more lead the open men’s squad in a pair and the men’s four, who impressed on their debut outing, remains untouched as Alex Partridge, Richard Egington, Alex Gregory and Matt Langridge. There are no changes to the men’s sculling squad from which Alan Campbell as well as Matt Wells and Stephen Rowbotham won golds in Banyoles. Campbell beat twice Olympic champion Olaf Tufte, of Norway, to take his title whilst  the double scull won in a photo-finish after a well-timed final sprint.

"I’ve got to make sure that I put in a top performance at every event this season, including the  World Championships", said Campbell who appears on a mission to make amends for his Olympic year which was disrupted horribly by a knee infection which eventually required surgery.

Dan Ritchie comes into the men’s  eight.  He was iin contention for a seat in Banyoles but was recovering from injury. James Foad moves into a second men’s  four.

Katherine Grainger continues her lone odyssey in the women’s single scull whilst Anna Bebington and Annabel Vernon will focus solely on the  women’s double scull rather than also doubling up into the women’s quadruple scull. That has opened up an opportunity for two new talents –  Sarah Cowburn, a former world junior single scull finalist, and Rosamund Bradbury, a world U23 finalist in 2008 – to join up with Katie Greves and Beth Rodford in Munich in the quadruple scull.

But Olivia Whitlam and Louisa Reeve will once more race in two boat categories – the women’s pair and eight.

Hester Goodsell returns to fitness and competes with Sophie Hosking in the lightweight women’s double scull with GB fielding a second boat of Andrea Dennis and Laura Greenhalgh. The lightweight men’s squad remains unchanged from Banyoles, apart from the  opportunity for an U23 lightweight men’s double scull,  and this squad will be looking to open up their medal count in Munich.

GB Rowing will also enter a full squad of adaptive (Paralympic-class) boats in Munich with crew announcements expected soon for these categories. This will be their first opportunity to race in such strength at a full world cup after participating  alongside the Olympic qualifying regatta in Poznan last year.
