GB’s Olympic record in Women’s fours

GB has never won an Olympic medal in Women’s fours.

When women’s rowing was first added to the Olympic programme in 1976, Women’s fours were coxed. In 1992 they became coxless, but the event was cut from the programme between 1996 and 2016 in favour of the Lightweight men’s four. It was reinstated in 2020.

GB’s Olympic record in Men’s fours

All four athletes in the crew are making their Olympic debuts at Paris 2024, but GB has a strong history in this boat class. In total, GB has won gold in the event nine times, starting in 1908 and including an incredible run of five consecutive wins from 2000 to 2016 inclusive (the most recent win), as well as three silvers and a bronze.

The event was first raced at St Louis in 1904 (in 1900 there were only coxed fours).

GB’s Olympic record in Women’s quads

GB’s first women’s Olympic rowing medal was in the quad – when Guin Batten, Gillian Lindsay, Katherine Grainger and Miriam Batten won silver at Sydney 2000. The GB women’s quad won silver again at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

Women’s quads have been part of the Olympic regatta programme since women’s events were introduced in 1976, but were coxed from until 1984, switching to coxless after that.

Kat Copeland and Sophie Hosking won the Lightweight women’s doubles in superb style at London 2012. This is the only GB medal in the event, although Emily and Imogen missed the podium in Tokyo 2020 by just 0.01 seconds and were only 0.5 seconds off gold.

Lightweight events were added to the Olympic programme in 1996, and will be removed again after Paris 2024, making way for Beach Sprint rowing.

GB has won the Men’s pairs six times, in 1908, 1932, 1948 and then on three consecutive occasions from 1988 to 1996. These were Steve Redgrave’s second, third and fourth Olympic gold medals – racing first with Andy Holmes, and then twice with Matthew Pinsent.

British men’s pairs have also won two silvers and three bronze medals in the event – with George Nash and Will Satch’s bronze at London 2012 the most recent GB podium.

Olympic Regatta Basics

  • Racing takes place over 2,000m on a six-lane course.
  • Every crew has at least two opportunities to progress beyond their heat. If they do not progress directly from their heat to the next round (which could be the final), they get a second chance in the ‘repechage’, which means ‘re-fishing out’.
  • The number of crews – and therefore the number of rounds – varies between events.
  • Since 2020, events at the Olympic Regatta have the same number of men’s and women’s crews.
  • Medals are awarded to the first 3 crews in the A Final of each event. B Finals (and C, D, and E Finals for the Single sculls) give crews an exact placing in the event.
  • Event abbreviations:
x:  sculling/2 blades per rower (otherwise ‘sweep’ i.e. 1 blade per rower)
    +: coxed
    : coxless
L: lightweight (maximum average weight per rower 70kg for men and 57kg for women)
