Mersey RC celebrates 170 years with 170km dock challenge
Around 40 members contributed to the overall goal of rowing 170km – 1 kilometre for every year since the club began – on Liverpool’s docks
The epic feat, covering the same distance as Liverpool to York or Liverpool to Birmingham, started at sunrise at 4.44am on 23 June 2024. The team finished just after sunset around 21.50pm, over 17 hours later. Club members of all ages clocked up the kilometers in a variety of boats.
The sun was shining, the atmosphere was amazing, and it was great to see so many people taking part.”
One of the club’s oldest members Nefyn Williams, 63, who rowed in the challenge, said it was a great way to celebrate such a momentous milestone: “It’s testament to the hard work of the committee and volunteers that keep the club going.” Imogen Marshall, who’s 14 and one of the youngest members, said: “I love being part of Mersey Rowing Club. It’s fun to do and nice to do sports with your friends. I enjoyed the junior squad rowing taking part in this challenge.”
Mersey RC is the only rowing club open to all in Liverpool, and is based at Liverpool Watersports Centre.
