London Otters Rowing Club – Squad Coach, Assistant Squad Coach and Session Coach roles

The London Otters, London’s LGBTQI-friendly rowing club, is seeking passionate and skilled coaches at all levels to join our team and support our growing club, from novices to performance-level. Based at the Royal Docks in East London, we welcome rowers of all abilities and backgrounds. We’re committed to inclusive rowing and creating a safe, supportive environment for our diverse membership.

We’ve come a long way: we are celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and we’ve grown to almost 250 members! Our senior crews are beginning to perform at higher levels and are hungry for more success. At the same time, our intermediate squad is growing significantly as our well-developed learn to row courses and novice squad provide future generations of rowers into the club. As we continue to grow and progress, we’re looking for dedicated coaches to help drive our performance to new heights while enabling all to access the sport.

Available Positions:

  • Squad Coach (performance focus)
  • Assistant Squad Coaches (multiple positions)
  • Session Coaches (multiple positions).

Responsibilities:

  • Squad Coach: Working with the Squad Captain(s) and Head Coaches, our Squad Coaches are responsible for arranging and delivering in-person coached sessions. Depending upon the Squad, they may be required to lead Assistant Squad Coaches and Session Coaches. Together with the Head Coaches, our Squad Coaches implement training programs, and prepare crews for competitive events.
  • Assistant Squad Coach: Working with a Squad Coach, responsible for delivering on-water (and occasionally land based) training in one of our squads.
  • Session Coaches: Assist with on-water and land-based coaching on an ad-hoc basis, supporting various squads and sessions throughout the week. This could include supporting our Senior/performance squads or helping Novice rowers develop basic skills and nurture a love for the sport.

All coaches will:

  • Provide water and land-based training
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed
  • Foster a positive, inclusive club culture
  • Collaborate with other coaches and club leadership
  • Attend regattas and competitions as needed.

Qualifications/Skills

Required:

  • Passion for rowing, enthusiasm for coaching and commitment to inclusivity
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of athletes.

Preferred:

  • British Rowing Club Coach Level 2 or similar certification
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 or similar certification
  • First Aid certification
  • Experience coaching rowers of various skill levels
  • Understanding of LGBTQI+ inclusivity in sports.

Salary: Compensation is competitive and based on experience and role.

Type: Primary training times are Saturdays 07:30-14:00, Hours vary by position and by squad.
