Trafford Rowing Club members of all ages are gearing up for a test of endurance and teamwork as they set out to row 100km this September in support of bone cancer patients.

The challenge is taking place to raise funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust — the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer.

This charity fundraiser is open to everyone and participants are encouraged to row their own way – in a boat as part of a team or solo, or indoors on a rowing machine.

Graham Whistance, chairman of Trafford Rowing Club, said: “We are excited to take on this challenge and make a positive impact for the bone cancer community. Our members are dedicated athletes who also care deeply about supporting others. This challenge is a wonderful opportunity to combine our passion for rowing with our commitment to giving back.”

Laura Franklin, Challenge Events Fundraising Officer at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, added: “On behalf of everyone at the charity, we are incredibly grateful to Trafford Rowing Club for taking on this ‘oar-inspiring’ challenge to support our vital cause. The funds raised will go such a long way to supporting our patients and their families when they need us most.”

The challenge is also being supported by 2016 and 2020 Paralympic rowing champion Laurence Whiteley MBE, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – the most common form of primary bone cancer in children and young adults – when he was 14 years old.

Following gruelling chemotherapy and extensive limb-salvage surgery, Laurence was determined to revive his love of sport after his treatment ended. With the support of his father and nearby Tees Rowing Club, Laurence’s love of the sport grew, and he was invited to trial for Team GB.

If you would like to test the waters, Trafford Rowing Club are offering free trial sessions throughout summer, meaning there’s no better time to try a new hobby this September whilst supporting bone cancer patients.
