Furnivall Sculling Club – Paid Position: Racing Squad Coach

Furnivall Sculling Club is seeking to recruit a Racing Squad Coach to support the development of athletes at our historic sculling and sweep rowing club and continue our journey to rebuild our club to competitiveness over the next 3-5 years.

We are seeking a squad coach to lead either our Women’s Racing Squad or Men’s Racing Squad in both sweep rowing and sculling under the leadership of our Head Coach, John Hickling.

Furnivall is a vibrant club with over 125 years of history based in Hammersmith. As the oldest women’s rowing club in the country, Furnivall has a reputation for offering a competitive yet inclusive environment for our 200 members. We pride ourselves on being a diverse and inclusive club, enabling longevity and flexibility in our members’ rowing careers while supporting them in reaching their maximum potential.

Rebuilding after Covid and a complete boat house refurbishment, we have a men’s and women’s squad that each regularly have 20-24 athletes attending water and land training sessions, allowing us to enter two eights per squad in this year’s head races. All athletes in the squads follow a comprehensive training programme.

We are seeking a squad coach to lead either our Women’s Racing Squad or Men’s Racing Squad in both sweep rowing and sculling under the leadership of our Head Coach, John Hickling. Responsibilities include:

  • Coaching weekly water sessions on the Tideway on Saturday and Sunday mornings (07:30 – 11:30), as well as at least one weekday evening (18:30 – 20:00)
  • Coaching 1 weekday evening ergo sessions (18:30 – 20:00)
  • Developing squad coxswains
  • Setting crews for training and racing for both Henley crews and lower boats
  • Setting the squad’s training plan together with the Head Coach
  • Setting the squad’s racing programme together with the Head Coach and Club Captain
  • Managing the involvement of the session and volunteer coaches assigned to the squad.

Remuneration will be provided at an hourly rate in line with experience, typically between £15 – £25 per hour. Preferred experience includes:

  • Minimum 2 years coaching experience
  • Experience of coaching both sweep rowing and sculling
  • Good understanding of rowing, navigation, and safety on the Tideway
  • Launch driving experience, ideally RYA Level 2 or equivalent (however, we can support you in acquiring this).

We are looking for a coach who shares our vision to help the club grow and support all squad members, from recent graduates of the Development Squad through to the more experienced athletes of the women’s or men’s racing squads, in reaching their maximum potential.

If you have a passion for coaching and want to help us continue the development of either the men’s or the women’s squad then please submit a CV / outline of your coaching experience and skills, with references, to Captain Evelyn Tichy at [email protected] and Head Coach John Hickling at [email protected]. If you would like an informal chat about the role please do drop us a note to arrange a call or informal meeting at Furnivall.
