1972 Olympian to give talk at London RC about elite rowing in the 1950s
All are welcome to the talk by Jerry McCarthy of Poplar Blackwall & District RC at London RC on Thursday, 12 September at 7pm
83-year old Jerry McCarthy will reflect on how elite rowing evolved during the 1950s and how rowers who worked in London‘s docklands trained.
As member of Poplar, Blackwall & District RC, Jerry reached the semi final of the Goblets at Henley Royal Regatta in 1965, rowing with clubmate Ray Easterling. Notably, they beat the reigning Olympic Champions from Canada in the second round. In 1966 Easterling and McCarthy reached the final where they lost to an East German pair by two lengths.
He was also a member of London RC.
Jerry went on to be selected to represent Great Britain at the 1970 World Rowing Championships in the Men’s double sculls with Pat Delafield. He also raced in the Men’s pair the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich with Matthew Cooper.
The event is non-ticketed.
