After the regatta was approached by the TV production company, Northern Region Umpiring Committee Chair and Durham Regatta Organising Committee member Dr Richard Mortimer enrolled Matt and his mum Janice as trainee umpires so that they could get fully involved.

Richard explains, “The pair took on start duties and proved to be quick learners under the watchful tuition of British Rowing Umpires Chloe Kelly and Harry Longbottom. Ahead of race day mum and son practised the start procedure, demonstrating that they could react rapidly to developing situations and were subsequently approved to progress to live competition on race day. After overseeing some lively racing, I thought our newest trainees performed like seasoned professionals and would encourage them to complete their training and gain British Rowing Umpire Licenses in due course.

Find out how Matt and Janice got on by watching Matt Baker: Travels with Mum & Dad tonight (Monday, 9 September 2024) on More4, or after that at any time on the Channel 4 streaming site.
