St Hugh’s Boat Club, Oxford – Head Coach

St Hugh’s Boat Club seeks a Head Coach to lead their men’s and women’s squads.

About the Club

SHBC is a midfield college rowing club. Regularly fielding three men’s and two women’s boats in major bumps competitions. The previous bumps campaign was one of our most successful in recent history with our Men’s first boat reaching its highest ever position on the river and going +3. The club has maintained a strong squad on both sides going into the coming academic year and is simultaneously aiming for a strong recruitment and novice campaign. The near-term goal is to have a total of 6 boats regularly qualifying for and competing in both competitions. As a consequence, the long-term aim is to have both men’s and women’s 1st VIIIs at the top of division two, with second VIIIs being in fixed divisions. St Hugh’s College is one of the largest Oxford colleges and therefore the boat club can draw from a large pool of potential rowers.

The position

The boat club is looking to appoint one head coach to oversee the coaching and development activities across all boats for both sides. The successful candidate will have the ambition to develop the medium-term performance of the boat club as a whole and will work with and guide a team of three to four coaches to fulfil this ambition. Helping to instil an inclusive and performance-oriented club culture through a clear coaching philosophy will likely be a key success factor.

The expected time-commitment is between 5 and 7 water sessions (typically 1 ½ to 2 hours long) per week during term time, with availability being flexible but restricted to river-opening times. The head coach will be expected to conduct sessions for all boats, with a focus on 1st boats. Training is split between the Isis and Godstow stretch of river in Oxford, with 1st boats and senior crews largely using the latter.
