Five Heat wins at World U23 Championships
GB Rowing clocked up five heat wins on the opening day of the world U23 championships in Brandenburg, Germany, to move through to semi-finals with two other crews getting to the same stage by placing highly enough in their heats. Five crews racing today have a chance to progress via the repechages.
GB’s heat winners were the women’s single and double sculls, the men’s pair, eight and double scull. The men’s four were second to Germany and the lightweight women’s double scull were third.
Tina Stiller, who will next month travel to Beijing as reserve for the Olympic team, was particularly impressive whilst Bill Lucas and Charles Cousins, already having tasted senior world cup level competition this season and last, were the double scull winners.
Youth Olympic gold medallist Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell was part of the men’s eight who were winners from Spain in second and the Netherlands in third. This crew also contains twins Chris and Mason Durant.
