Rowing to Success (Chester) – Youth Rowing Coach and Activity Co-ordinator & Welfare Lead (2 roles)
We’re on the lookout for passionate, motivated changemakers to join our team and deliver a game-changing initiative for young people in Chester – especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds and young disabled people.
Love Rowing, British Rowing’s Charitable Foundation, is launching a transformative programme called Rowing to Success, designed to reshape junior rowing in Chester. The programme aims to support young people, particularly from lower socio-economic backgrounds and young disabled children, by improving their mental well-being, life skills, and aspirations through rowing – a sport deeply connected to nature. The programme will provide young people with the opportunity to experience indoor and water-based rowing, support their continued participation in extracurricular rowing, and help them transition to ongoing rowing opportunities in the Dee-side clubs.
These roles are crucial to ensuring the success and sustainability of the Rowing to Success programme, supporting young people in Chester to achieve their full potential through rowing.
Love Rowing is a trustee led charity that aims to transform lives through the sport, bringing new diverse communities to rowing. Rowing to Success is funded by the Westminster Foundation, an independent grantmaking trust and registered charity representing the charitable interests of The Duke of Westminster and Grosvenor businesses.
They focus their grantmaking on inspiring children and young people (0-25 years old) early in life to support the prevention of long-term systemic problems. They believe a child or young person will more likely experience sustainable change when those around them also engage. Their funding creates opportunities for families, communities and broader society to nurture and sustain young people over time. They use their support and resources to assist community organisations, educational institutions, and youth hubs as ‘local experts’ who can help young people to thrive in the long-term.
The delivery of Rowing to Success is as follows:
- Stage 1: Each year 25 cohorts of 12 young people from the target audiences will have the opportunity to experience indoor rowing at their school and water based rowing at QPCRC (7 weeks).
- Stage 2: Extra-curricular rowing clubs will be provided 2-3 evenings per week, with transport provided from the school gate of the schools taking part in stage 1, and parents /guardians picking up from the club.
- Stage 3: Any interested participants will be given the opportunity to work with the team to gain personalised support with the transition to ongoing rowing at any of the Dee-side Chester clubs. This will include the Youth Rowing Coach supporting clubs in preparation for a new member and, if appropriate, attending the club with the young person for their first session. The Youth Rowing Coach and Activity Co-ordinator will work with the young people and their support networks to sensitively understand the barriers to ongoing participation, prioritising young people experiencing financial disadvantage. Appropriate support will be provided such as a bursary for their first year’s membership or appropriate clothing to loan or at a reduced rate.
- Stage 4: In partnership with the Dee-side clubs, additional opportunities to encourage transition will be offered including inclusive rowing festivals, holiday programmes, along with a new weekly dedicated adaptive junior rowing session for participants who require additional support and chose a dedicated environment over a mainstream setting.
