Former World and European champion Sam Scrimgeour was named as the lightweight men's spare for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Scrimgeour raced in the lightweight men’s pair for nearly all of the Rio Olympiad, winning medals at four successive World Championships, and was an established member of a very competitive lightweight men’s squad.
He retired from classic international rowing at the end of the 2017 season, in which he raced in the lightweight men’s pair with Joel Cassells.
Since then he has embarked on a second rowingf career, in the beach sprint format.
