Club Volunteer Roles
Outlined here are some of the roles that a club may need to fill.
We’ve listed them here to give an idea of common responsibilities. In a small club you will be able to combine roles and in a larger club you will probably have more than one person doing some of these jobs.

Captain and Vice Captains | Responsible for boats, squads, equipment. Reports to committee and AGM. Recruitment and new rowers. |
Treasurer | Payment and renewal of insurances and licences. Accounts and annual audit. Maintain financial records and monitor trends. Any investments the clubs makes. Payments to creditors. Liaise with Membership Secretary on membership payments. |
Secretary | Co-ordinate and disseminate correspondence to committee and members. AGM and committee meeting minutes. Club records and memorabilia. |
Membership Secretary | Maintain database of members. Liaise with Treasurer on membership payments. |
Club Safety Advisor | Ensure the club complies with BR guidance in RowSafe. Link with Regional Safety Advisor to report incidents correctly. Update club on relevant safety matters. Organise any safety training for club or individuals. |
Welfare Officer | Information and advice on British Rowing’s Safeguarding policies for Children and Vulnerable Adults. Ensuring the club adopts and follows British Rowing’s Safeguarding Policies and procedures. Promote awareness of policy through the club. Keep necessary records of DBS checks. Receive information from those with a concern and refer it to the relevant bodies in line with British Rowing guidance, keeping all parties informed as necessary. |
Coaches or rowing group Co-ordinators (including Learn to Row co-ordinator) | Training programmes. Crew selections. Technique and development. |
Adaptive Rowing Co-ordinator | Contacting local groups and advertising opportunities to potential rowers. Assessing the club’s accessibility and making recommendations to the Committee. Organising suitable training programmes. |
Entries Administrator | Enter club members in crews at affiliated events (this task may be done by Club Captains and/or coaches). |
Facilities or House Manager | Maintenance and upkeep of clubhouse and grounds. Repairs and renovations. Safety checks and compliance. Cleaning. |
Social Secretary | Co-ordinate annual calendar of events. Organise annual dinner. Fundraising events. Encourage use of bar and clubroom. |
Bar Manager | Stock control. Ordering. Organising staff. |
Regatta Secretary | Running racing side of club’s head of the river race or regatta. Liaise with club committee. |
Publicity Officer | Editing club mailing/ newsletter/ website. Co-ordinate publicity for club events. Run club marketing. |

The key is to think about why the people who currently volunteer are there and whether they are getting what they hoped of out of the work. Once you have this information it will help you keep people motivated as well as attract more volunteers for jobs in future.
