Ed Fuller

As a child, Ed was diagnosed with haemophilia, which affects the blood's ability to clot

Bleeds into his ankle joints when he was aged nine and 11 meant that he had to use a wheelchair for a time to keep the pressure off his feet and although he tried hockey, swimming and cycling, it was rowing, which he had seen at the 2012 Olympics, which proved the perfect fit.

From the early beginnings of trying out a rowing machine at an after-school club to going out on the water with Exeter Rowing Club, Ed found a sport which he could excel at. Ed enjoyed victories at the prestigious National Schools’ Regatta before joining the GBRT Para Rowing programme in 2022. Ed now has three World Championship medals (two in the PR3 Mixed Four and one in the PR3 Pair) and has his sights set on the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Alongside his sporting successes, he had to deal with his condition, which requires him to inject medication into his arms every other day to help his blood clot, make him less likely to have bleeds and bruises and also reduce his pain. It took him about 18 months to get it right, as he was terrified of needles and he kept missing the vein, but now it has become second nature to him.

He is very motivated by winning and being a successful athlete and is inspired by fellow haemophiliac, Alex Dowsett, who has achieved amazing things in cycling.
