Home International Rowing Regatta
The Home International Rowing Regatta is a historic annual competition dating back to 1962 in which the four ‘Home Nations’ of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland compete
England Rowing
The England Team is an opportunity for rowers to trial either in crews or small boats to earn the chance to represent England with their coach, fellow club members or just by themselves.
Representing England is a unique development opportunity for both rowers and coaches wishing to gain international experience. For some, it could be the first step to representing Great Britain. The England Team has seen many Olympic and Paralympic rowers receive their first international representation. If selected you’ll be following the footsteps of many athletes who have rowed for Team GB including;
- Laurence Whiteley, Paralympic Gold Medalist Rio 2016 (2012 – MTA1x)
- Guin Batten, Olympic Silver Medalist Sydney 2000 (1993 – W1x)
- Steve Redgrave, 5x Olympic Gold Medalist 1988 – 2000 (1978 – JM4+).
This tradition continues at the Paris 2024 Olympics and we are proud to see 10 previous England rowers represent Team GB at the games.

The Home International Rowing Regatta
The Home International Rowing Regatta is a historic annual competition dating back to 1962 seeing the four ‘Home Nations’ of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland compete. Every race counts towards combined team trophies for Junior Women, Junior Men, Senior Women and Senior Men.
A new racing format, introduced in 2022, gives rowers a minimum of two races, with the majority racing three times. Racing takes place over 2000m for all boat classes (shown below). With the 4x, 8+ and both Para 1x racing a second time over 500m.
The 2024 Home International Rowing Regatta will take place on Saturday, 27 July at Strathclyde Park, Scotland and will be hosted by Scottish Rowing.

Trial FAQs
When do entries open and close?
Entries open on 12:00 (noon) Monday, 17 June 2024.
Entries close on 12:00 (noon) Thursday, 11 July 2024.
Crew/boat entry will be through BROE2. Coaches seeking selection should complete this registration form.
What is the definition of a ‘junior’ athlete?
The England Rowing Team uses the British Rowing definition of a ‘junior,’ rather than the World Rowing definition, i.e. junior athletes must have been born on or after 1st September 2005. This means that athletes who turned 18 between September and January 2023 are still eligible for the HIRR, even though they cannot compete in the GB U19 team.
Are composite crews allowed?
Yes! If clubs have single athletes looking for selection, or fewer numbers looking to compete, we would encourage and welcome composite crews.
How do coxes get selected?
The cox of each selected 4+ will be selected. Coxes who wish to be selected must attend the trial.
Can we double up?
Doubling up is permitted between divisions, however rowers must remain in either sculling or sweep disciplines. If doubling up from a pair (2-) to a four (4- or 4+), both athletes from the pair must also be present in the four.
What is the selection process for coaches?
The coaching policy has been updated for the 2024 regatta. 8 coaches will be selected – one for each gender and discipline (junior women, junior men, senior women, senior men). Coaches seeking selection must register their intent using the registration form and meet the requirements specified under Section 9 of the selection policy.
What is the racing format of the trial?
Weather permitting, all racing will be held over 1500m in a time trial format. Further information can be found under Section 6 of the selection policy.
Must we provide our own equipment?
Yes. All equipment must be provided by athletes/crews/clubs trialling for selection. In addition, if a crew or athlete is asked to race off in a different boat type it is the responsibility of that athlete/crew/club to source a boat and it is their responsibility if any damage is incurred.
Is there financial support available?
British Rowing and the England Rowing team are committed to supporting selected athletes and coaches who may face financial hardship. We understand that trialling and competing for the England Rowing Team can be costly, and further information on financial support is available in Appendix C of the selection policy
Is there a way I can show my support for the team even if I’m not trialling?
Yes. You can purchase England Rowing Official Merchandise directly from our Kit Supplier Crewroom here. 10% of each sale goes towards supporting athletes on the England Rowing Team.
How does selection work for the England Home International Rowing Beach Sprint Team?
Information about representing England at the Home International Rowing Beach Sprints can be found here.
Where do I find information about being selected for Scottish or Welsh Home International Rowing Teams?
Teams for Scotland and Wales are selected by Scottish Rowing and Welsh Rowing respectively. British Rowing is responsible for the selection of individuals and crews representing England only. See section 3a British Rowing: Articles of Association.
