Brasenose College Boat Club – Head Coach

Brasenose College Boat Club are seeking an ambitious individual with a history of fostering talent and competitiveness to head up coaching of both sides of the Club.

Brasenose College Boat Club (BNCBC) stands as the oldest rowing club in the world, dating back to 1815 when we won the first modern rowing event against Jesus College Boat Club. Over the past two years we’ve made significant steps towards returning the club to its rightful place at the top of college rowing, and we are committed to continuing that trend.

We are hiring for the position of Head Coach on a self-employed basis, set to commence from January 2025. We are seeking a highly skilled and ambitious individual to lead our competitive Open and Women’s sides. The Head Coach will work closely with the Assistant Coach and the Captains to design and implement comprehensive training plans, with the goal of achieving success in bumps campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the coaching for all boats across the Open and Women’s sides
  • Liaise with Captains and the Assistant Coach to devise a comprehensive, forward-looking, and ambitious training plan for the Club
  • Advise the Committee of the Club on equipment and rowing events
  • Collaborate with the Captains and Assistant Coach to set crews for Torpids and Summer VIIIs
  • Coach training camps at the start of Michaelmas and Trinity Terms
  • Attend weekend external events and 3 week-long internal events a year.

Essential Attributes

  • Proven coaching experience at a competitive level
  • Level 2 or above qualified coach
  • Availability to coach 200 hours per term, based on an average of 25 hours per week over an 8-week term, with expected flexible availability throughout the day
  • Willingness to commit to a long term project
  • Liaise with College Boatman over fleet repairs and upkeep
  • Strong understanding of rigging principles and ability to set boats accordingly
  • Passion for rowing!

Desirable Attributes

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualified
  • X/S status coxing licence and a willingness to coach-cox when needed
  • Familiarity with Oxford College Rowing; particularly rowing on the Isis and Bumps racing.
