Curlew RC – Head of Rowing

About Curlew:

Curlew RC is based in East London, founded in 1866. We are a sweep focused club, with the main aims of the season for the senior squad to improve year on year results at WeHoRR (2022: 58th) and HoRR (2022: 96th) and progression through HWR and HRR. Recent HWR appearances include: The Lester Trophy (2021 and 2019) and The Copas Cup (2018). Recent HRR appearances include: Wyfold (2021, 2019, 2017) and Thames (2019, 2018, 2017). In 2022, the Senior Women’s squad is targeting 1 x VIII+ in The Copas Cup and the Senior Men’s Squad is targeting 2x 4-s in the Wyfold.

Our senior squads rowers are from a mix of backgrounds: those who have rowed since school, those who learned at university, and those who have progressed through learn to row and the development squads at Curlew RC and reached the required standard. We have athletes early on in their rowing career through to those with international and national titles.

Athletes all follow the same land and water-based training programme, overseen by the Head Coach and both the Men’s and Women’s Captains. We have set training six days a week with optional training encouraged on days with no set training or only one session. Land training includes ergs, weights, stretching and other forms of cardio (cycling, running etc.). Water sessions are Saturday and Sunday mornings throughout the year, with mid-week water-based sessions in the spring, summer and autumn.

Our fleet is based at the London Regatta Centre, rowing on the 2000m multi-lane stretch of water that is the Royal Albert Dock, with a cycle path along the whole of one side of the dock. Our clubhouse and gym (fully refurbished in 2021) are on the banks of the Thames in Greenwich.
